Brief Details of The Research Work
Topic: Development of a Foam Fluid for Drilling of Coalbed Methane WellsUnder the guidance of: Prof. A. K. Pathak, Department of Petroleum Engineering Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad and Dr. Keka Ojha (Associate Professor) Department of Petroleum Engineering Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
Brief Synopsis: Research was on developing new foam fluid that can be used in the drilling of highly fractured, shallow and coalbed methane wells. This will primarily eliminate problems of formation damage and fluid loss which are encountered when conventional methods of overbalanced drilling are applied in coalbed methane and highly fractured reservoirs. During the course of the research foam was developed using a mixture of different polymers and surfactants.
Study was performed on the stability, rheology, microscopic properties, and thermal stability along with its hydrodynamic behavior within the well bore. A setup was designed and fabricated to study the cutting carrying capability of foam. Pressure drop per unit length of the test section are observed for the foam flowing through it along with the cuttings. This helps in predicting the behavior of foam in the dynamic borehole conditions.
Also, new correlations were developed to determine the settling velocities of solids and to estimate the differential pressure drop across the pipe length for foam flowing through it.
