What is Energy ?
It's simple - Energy is the ability to do work.
Even though you can't ever really see it, energy
causes millions of different actions & reactions
to occur every single day.
In fact, whenever something moves, heats, cools,
grows, changes, produces light or sound;
Energy is involved.
Solar energy reaching Earth: 1000W/sqm.
The amount of Solar energy intercepted by
the Earth every minute is greater than amount
of fossil fuel the world uses every year.Society through the ages
have worshipped Sun as God.

Climate Change - Fact or Fiction:
Scientists say average global temperatures
have varied by less than one degree since the
dawn of human civilization
But world heated up by 0.6C last century
and 90s were the warmest decade on record.
A global rise of between 1.4C and 5.8Cis expected by 2100.
Sea levels rose between 10-20cm worldwide
during the 20th Century. A further rise of
between 9cm and 88cm is predicted by 2100.
Way Forward:
I urge you to look ahead, beyond the Protocol, which takes us only to year2012. The longer-term challenge is to promote the use of low-carbon energysources, low greenhouse gas technologies and renewable energy sources

atmosphere & resultant weather phenomena

Solar Cooking :
A solar box cooker traps the sun's energy in an
insulated box.
Such boxes have been successfully used for
cooking, pasteurization and fruit canning.
Solar cooking is helpful in many developing
countries, both reducing demand for local
firewood and maintaining a cleaner breathing
environment for the cooks.
Parabolic type cookers focus the suns rays at
the base of the cooking vessel to simulate
conventional cooking devices.
Solar Lighting (Natural) :
Solar lighting or daylighting is the use of
natural light to provide illumination.
Daylighting offsets energy use in electric
lighting systems and reduces the cooling load on
HVAC systems.
Window orientation, exterior shading, sawtooth
roofs, clerestory windows, light shelves, skylights
and light tubes are among the many daylighting
features.
Daylight saving time (DST) is a method of
utilising solar energy by matching available
sunlight to hours of day when most useful.

Solar Thermal for Power :
Solar thermal energy can be used to heat a heat
exchanger to high temperature and the heat is
used to produce electric power or for other
industrial purposes.
Power towers (or central tower) use an array of
flat, moveable mirrors (called heliostats) to focus
the sun's rays upon a collector tower (the target).
The energy at this point of concentrated
sunlight is transferred to a substance that can
store the heat for later usage.

Solar Concentrators :
Solar energy converted to heat in concentrator typecollector can be used to boil water into steam todrive a steam engine or steam turbine.
The concentrating collector can be a troughcollector, parabolic collector, or power tower.
Concentrating collector with Sterling engine:
The Sterling engine is a type of heat engine whichuses a sealed working gas (i.e. a closed cycle) anddoes not require a water supply.
A solar Sterling system holds the record forconverting solar energy into electricity (30%at 1,000 watts per square meter).

Solar Chemicals & Bio-fuels :
The oil in plant seeds, in chemical terms, very
closely resembles that of petroleum.
Since invention of the Diesel engine, many
have been using this form of captured solar
energy as a fuel for use in any diesel engine or
generator and known as Biodiesel.
Solar chemical refers to a process that harnesses
solar energy by absorbing sunlight in a chemical
reaction like photo-synthesis without using
living organisms.
A possible application is splitting water to
produce hydrogen and oxygen.
Solar Ponds :
Solar pond is a pool of water which collects and
stores solar energy.
Layers of salt solutions with increasing
concentration (& density) to a certain depth,
below which the solution has a uniform high salt
concentration.
When solar radiation is absorbed, density
gradient prevents heat in lower layers from
moving upwards by convection.
This means that the temperature at the bottom
of the pond will rise to over 90C while
temperature at the top is at 30C.

one of the largest in world!

Solar Photo Voltaic :
Solar cells, also referred to as photovoltaic cells,
are devices or banks of devices that generate
electricity directly from sunlight.
A set of cells make a module, and due to its
modular design, they can be designed from a
small calculator to large MW size plants.
Solar PV power plants can be either stand-alone
(with batteries) or grid connect.
PV power is a clean and green technology
which produces no noise and pollution.
PV is perfect answer where conventional grid
supply is unavailable or unviable.

Incentives :
The Government offers 80% depreciation on all solar products on
year 1 of its installation. Corporate tax rate is at 33.6%
Some states have initiated the feed-in
tariff system but is more suited for wind.
Integrated Energy Policy does recognizethe importance of solar in the energy mix
but no incentive structure in place.
