Preface
This statistical handbook has been prepared in the Trade Policies
and Export Projections Division of the Economics Department. It is the
latest edition of an annual series. This issue, however, differs from
earlier ones in that it contains for the first time a section on trade;
the Division will expand this section in the 1973 edition. Particularly
noteworthy is the primary caamodity trade matrix tables which will enable
the users to establish rapidly the importance of individual commodities
to the trade earnings of individual countries and the main sources of
supply of specific commodities.
SE:veral members of the Division contributed to the preparation of
the handbook. Assembly of the data was carried out by Mr. G. S. Ahuja
under the supervision of Mr. Shamsher Singh.
The last edition of Commodity Price Trends (EI'!-166/7l) was pub-
l1shed in August 1971. This edition has had its title modified to
Commodity Trade and Price Trends in recognition of the inclusion of a
section o~ trade.

I. INTRODUCTION'
1. The purpose of this report is to present factual info:rrnatlon on the medium-term and the long-term trends in the trade of the developing countries and in .51 market price quotations of 35 primary commodH las which figure importantly in internationHl trade. These data ar~ presented in Sections II and IV of this report.
2. Section III of the report shows a selected set of general price indices that can be used as deflators. These include the U.S. General Wholesale Price Index, the Sauerbeck/U.K. Import Price Index, the U.N. Import Unit Value Price Index, U.S. GNP Implicit Deflator and the OECD GNP Implicit Den at or • 'l1lese series are widely used as defiators to eliminate the effect of changes in the general price level over time. The resulting adjusted price series is often referred to as a "relative" or "real" price. Since the denators are expressed in 1960-62=100, the actual price and the denated price in that period would be identical.
3. Selected indices of ocean freight rates are also shown in Section III, since most of the price series are based on e.i.f. quotations at the major consuming markets. Although the freight element in c.i.f. prices varies greatly among the different commodities, it is ordinarily not more than approximately 10 percent of the e.i.f. value for most of the commodities shown.
4. It will be noted in Section IV that actual prices for the period 19.50-1971 (with partial information for 1972) are shown in tabular and graphic form whereas pre-war prices are shown only in graphic form. In order to indicate the movement of commodity prices relative to the general price level, the graphs also show the U.S. Wholesale Price Index or the U.Ko Sauerbeck/Import Price Index, depending on the currency in which the price quotation is expressed. Also, for same commodities more than one price series is shown. There are basically two reasons for this. In same cases, there are different grades or varieties of a commodity (e.g., coffee, tea and cotton) which have a substantial price differential. In other cases, trade barriers or industry practices have resulted in isolating the two principal commodity markets, the United States and Western Europe, from each other for the same variety or grade (e.g., non-ferrous metals).

I. INTRODUCTION
