Reduced cost
Facilitates continuous process improvement through
‘Manufacturability knowledge’ capture and reuse
Supports ‘Design anywhere – Manufacture anywhere’
Minimizes time-to-market
“Injection molding parts are typically complex and difficult to check manually. Compared to earlier manual methods of checking parts for draft angles, wall
thickness and undercuts; DFMPro quickly and accurately identifies such regions. It serves the direct purpose of identifying manufacturability problems right at
the design stage and helps reduce design iterations.
It is an easy to use tool which significantly helped us to reduce our part checking time by almost 60% while ensuring robust quality of design.”

Injection Molding
The Injection Molding module in DFMPro helps designers automatically
validate the design of injection molded plastic parts. The design checks include
standard rules and guidelines to improve the moldability of the designs and
the life of the mold, increase the operational life of the part, and reduce
manufacturing cost.
Some of the important rules supported for Injection Molding include uniform
wall thickness, appropriate rib design parameters, minimum mold wall
thickness, undercuts detection, minimum radius at the tip/base of a boss, and
minimum draft angles.
Assembly
DFMPro now not only supports analysis of parts but also assemblies!
Minimum clearance requirements can be easily specified as a set of rules or
checks for individual as well as a set of generic components. The analysis
results can also be exported and shared with other users. This drastically
reduces the time required for clearance analysis in assemblies and ensures
adherence to nominal clearance specifications.
The new assembly module also checks alignment of holes. This is a simple yet
powerful functionality as checking hole-alignment visually can be a tedious
process.
Sheet metal
The Sheet metal module of DFMPro supports several common sheet metal
design guidelines, which help produce parts economically, with better quality,
and in a shorter duration.
Some of the common sheet metal design guidelines included in the module
are minimum distance between holes, cutouts, slots to part edge and bends;
multiple bends in same direction and minimum bend radius; minimum radius
of rolled hem, open hem, and tear drop hem; minimum flange width; and
minimum size of slots and holes.

Leads to overall cost reduction
Captures mistakes early in the design stage
Ensures past mistakes are not repeated (especially by new design engineers)
Leverages experience of experts
Decreases overall cycle time
Facilitates on-the-job training of design engineers
"We have many plastic and sheet metal components in our products.
DFMPro helps our designers quickly identify the issues which are
otherwise dificult to capture at the design stage. These issues include
things like mold wall thickness and undercuts in plastic parts, incorrect
bends in sheet metal parts which cause problems downstream. This
tool helps our design teams understand the processes involved in
manufacturing. In other words, helps them understand how to Design
for Manufacturing. This leads to a significant reduction in design
iterations due to issues with manufacturability and a reduction in
design checking time. Our aim is to get designs right the first time and
this tool helps us achieve this goal.”

DFMPro from Geometric is an automated design for manufacturability tool, that identifies areas of design
which are difficult, expensive, or impossible to manufacture.
DFMPro is well integrated within leading CAD platforms like Creo Parametric (formerly Pro/ENGINEER)
from PTC, SolidWorks from Dassault Systems and NX from Siemens.
Machining
Machining module of DFMPro supports common DFM guidelines for
machining, which help in manufacturing parts economically and quickly, while
ensuring quality with readily available machining tools.
DFMPro design rules for the machining process include those for drilling,
prismatic milling, and lathe machining or turning. Some of the common design
guidelines in-built in the product are, avoid deep holes with small diameters;
design milling areas so that longer end mills are not required to machine;
features should be accessible to the cutting tool in the preferred machining
orientation; and many more.
Castings
The Castings module in DFMPro helps designers automatically validate the
design of castings parts. The design checks include standard rules and
guidelines to improve the producibility of the designs, increase the
operational life of the part, and reduce manufacturing cost.
Some of the important rules supported for Castings include fillet radius,
surface finish for machined faces, uniform wall thickness, mold wall thickness,
wall thickness variation, draft angle and undercut detection.
DFMPro Customizability
DFMPro provides a framework to capture and reuse manufacturability expertise in the form of design rules. Organizations get the ability to automate in-
house DFM practices incorporated in their standard operating procedures. The existing set of manufacturability checks can be implemented as a set of DFM
rules. Designs are validated against these rules for manufacturability.
"Now 3D design data of our products are checked by the DFMPro in the
design process. Our conventional checking process by designers was
highly time-consuming. In contrast, the DFMPro checking is truly fast
and reliable in searching the parts to be redesigned or corrected, and
the checking criteria can be customized for the appropriate checking of
our own products. As a result, we successfully reduced 75% of the
checking time of the wall thickness to enhance the efficiency and
effectiveness of our design improvement before the release of
drawings."
