FERTIL Honors Its Long Serving

The award was in recognition of FERTIL’s submission on its project “Replacing Hazard Material Used for Process Water Treatment with Safe-to-Handle and Environment-Friendly Material”.

The award was presented by H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, ADNOC Director General, to Mr. Ayoob Moh’d Saleh, FERTIL Acting Chief Executive Officer, in the presence of CEOs and senior officials from the ADNOC Group of Companies in addition to representatives from contracting companies.

The following is a brief on the project that won FERTIL this important award:

Phasing out dangerous HydrazineMinimizing the risk of damage arising from the use of hazardous substances in industrial processes is a target sought by all progressive organizations today. With this in mind, and in line with its commitment to occupational health and safety, FERTIL is constantly working on phasing out the use of such hazardous chemicals as part of its ongoing commitment to improve HSE performance and reduce potential injury

to employees and damage to the environment from exposure to such substances in FERTIL’s facilities.

One such identified chemical is Hydrazine. Hydrazine is being used for oxygen scavenging in high pressure boilers due to its excellent scavenging properties. However, its use carries health risks for employees handling the chemical. Potential health hazards include suspected carcinogen and cases of severe eye irritation and burns. As per NIOSH, it has an IDLH exposure limit of 50 ppm.

Hydrazine could not be replaced with other available alternatives due to their ineffective performance. However, FERTIL’s efforts to eliminate Hydrazine continued and various different products were reviewed. Finally, it was decided that a chemical developed by EG Water & Process Technologies, named CORTROL OS5601, which is a 5-10% Carbohydrazide solution, would be used.

Unlike Hydrazine, this product poses no handling hazard and is regarded as environment friendly. CORTROL OS5601 has been tested successfully and the results were acceptable.

FERTIL is now a “Responsible Care”

Company

This new compliance is a result of FERTIL’s eagerness to improve its system of institutional investment within an integrated model that takes into account the social and environmental impact of various projects, as well as the company’s commitment to adopt best practices at all levels.

FERTIL is pleased and proud to be amongst the fortunate GPCA-RC companies that are in line with the ICCA (International Council of Chemical Association) voluntary initiative.

The initiative reflects:

• The commitment of institutions and companies operating in this sector,

• The direction of the Health, Safety and Environment, Security and Safety of its products and processes along the Supply-Chain,

• The provision of adequate answers to the community regarding concerns that may arise or questions about the manufacture, distribution and use of the chemicals around them.

As a member of this initiative, FERTIL will greatly benefit from the abundance of ideas and recommendations relating to the promotion of Health, Safety and Environmental systems in various departments, through GPCA’s global network of expertise and relationships.

It is worth mentioning that GPCA adopted the Responsible Care® initiative in 2009 and actively sought for it to be applied in the Gulf region and, since then, the majority of member companies in GPCA, achieved impressive progress in this area and were able to apply the initiative in their daily operations.

The Chief Executive Officers of about 85% of full members of GPCA, signed the Global Charter of Responsible Care®, which reflects the commitment of these companies in the region on the implementation of the Responsible Care® program in the Arabian Gulf. 16 of the 34 full member companies are also certified Responsible Care® Management System (RC 14001), which we will target in the near future.

In 2012 and 2013, GPCA received first place in terms of ‘performance’ among the 57 global unions, under the umbrella of the International Council of Chemical Associations “ICCA”. This honor coincides with GPCA’s full membership in the RC® Leadership Body in 2010. GPCA is the only organization in the world that was awarded full membership during a period of less than two years, in addition to the number of participants which significantly increased in 2014.

Assuring its commitment to HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) principles to ensure higher standards, FERTIL is now compliant with the “Responsible Care®” initiative from GPCA (Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association).

The first quarter of 2015 was eventful for the Plant Availability Division as they had to manage two plant shutdowns for major repair work; one in FERTIL-1 and the other in FERTIL-2. Plant shutdowns for major maintenance work are expensive and time consuming because of the loss of production as well as the expense of the shutdown maintenance itself. They also pose daunting challenges to the maintenance team. However, both shutdowns were managed successfully due to excellent planning and execution.

The shutdown in FERTIL-2 was arranged in coordination with Samsung and was mainly for repairs on the Waste Heat Boiler, Sea Water Condensers, Inter-Stage Coolers, including modifications on Instrumentation Systems and Electrical Panels and was for a period of 14 days starting on 31st January 2015. It also involved the repair of many Control Valves and bearing inspections for the Synthesis Gas and Refrigeration Compressors. Eighteen plant modifications were also undertaken during this shutdown period. Some unforeseen problems were solved, especially in the valves, which were found to be in a very bad condition after dismantling and inspection. However, it is important to note that despite all the unfavourable constraints and unfortunate emergency works, the challenges were effectively overcome and the plant was handed over to Operations without any major delays.

On 13th March 2015, FERTIL-1 was shutdown mainly for the repair of the Waste Heat Boiler IBD line nozzle,

Final Gas Cooler and the overhaul of the Natural Gas Compressor in the Ammonia Plant. This shutdown window was also utilized for an internal inspection of the 4-Bar Absorber and HP Condenser in the Urea Plant. Initially, the shutdown duration was estimated to be 8 days, however, it was extended to 13 days due to the tube plugging and associated activities related to the Waste Heat Boiler which came up during the inspection.

The Shutdown involved an extraordinary effort from the Shutdown Planning Team to arrange resources on very short notice and synergize the efforts of a number of contracted manpower. The silver lining of both shutdowns was that they were free of any Lost Time Incidents despite employing a huge temporary external workforce round the clock.

In order to provide fast and efficient services for our employees, families and guests, the General Services Department started applying the online system with the Immigration Department for visa issuance procedures.

Company license renewals are also an area where the General Services Department process license renewals directly through the online system with the Ministry of Economy.

The new system proved its efficiency in many ways:

1. Reducing time spent to finish a job.

2. Is more time efficient, thereby enabling the General Services employees to achieve more tasks for the benefit of the company.

3. From an HSE point of view, the General Services employee is not obliged to travel to the airport or other government departments every time a service is required.

Company employees expressed their satisfaction with the efficiency and quality of services provided by the General Services Department, especially since the “Smart Government” system was applied.

FERTIL Services Go Smart

In line with the initiative of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid

Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of

FERTIL has adopted a Sustainability Policy that has three main pillars: People (Social Responsibility), Profit (Economic Growth) and Planet (Environmental).

A Sustainability Framework has been developed to meet FERTIL’s current business performance and future aspirations. The Sustainability Framework is a reference model for incorporating each pillar into every business practice decision and ensures that it remains a trusted stakeholder and valued contributor in society. Moreover, the adopted framework enhances and supports the achievement of strategic goals by demonstrating leadership commitment.

Mr. Hasan Abdulla Al Marzouqi, Vice President, Corporate HSE

Commitment to CorporateHSE Excellence

Mr. Marzouqi, please allow us to thank you on behalf of our readers for this brief interview. Would you tell us about yourself?

Well, I am Hasan Abdulla Al Marzouqi, married and have three sons and two daughters. I am a person who tries to balance his life between work and personal requirements and responsibilities. I respect and appreciate all people around me and show understanding and support. I am social, adventurous and interested in cultures. I believe that those who have worked with me would describe me as patient, calm, dynamic and honest.

Aside from my job, I like reading, voluntary work, traveling, walking and swimming. I am a member of the UAE Corvette club and I am very interested in collecting hand-made Bi/Tri-cycles.

Can you tell our readers about your career and experience?

As you know, I joined FERTIL in May 2015 as Vice President, Corporate HSE. Before that, I have had over 20 years of extensive, rich experience in the fields of HSE, sustainability, CSR, quality, audit, energy and risk management and related issues. Out of these 20 years, 15 were in the petrochemical sector.

I joined Abu Dhabi Polymer Co. Ltd. (Borouge) in 2000 as an HSE&Q Manager, where I put in place the HSE strategy, road map and business plan and oversaw the

FERTIL’s new VP-CHSE, Mr. Hasan Abdulla Al Marzouqi, is a veteran professional with extensive experience in a wide range of areas, including industrial HSE, sustainability, CSR, local, regional and international regulations and practices on occupational health, environment, safety, process safety, fire protection and Security. He also has hands-on experience in quality and audit, energy and risk management, to mention but a few.

Holding a Bachelor Degree in biology and chemistry and an ongoing Master Degree in Environmental Science, international Diploma in HSE Management Systems, with a host of other specialized certificates on Sustainability and CSR, Mr. Al Marzouqi is in an excellent position to lead FERTIL’s HSE, Sustainability and CSR function to a higher level of competency and regional and international recognition.

FERTIL News met with Mr. Al Marzouqi to shed some light on his career and plans for the Corporate HSE Division in FERTIL. Here is a synopsis of the interview:

21

implementation of the HSE&Q policy and represented Borouge in ADNOC’s HSE Steering Committee.

Later, in 2011, I assumed the post of Corporate Sustainability Development Advisor in Borouge, where I provided advice on sustainability issues and set the sustainability strategy, layout foundation and roadmap. I also provided direction and technical support to Borouge’s Production and Marketing companies, especially in areas like CSR, stakeholders’ engagement, sustainability materiality and image building of Borouge as a global challenges solutions provider, manufacturing sustainable products and as a socially responsible company.

Before the oil and gas sector and after graduation, I worked for the Municipality between 1996 and 2000 as a Deputy Manager of the Public Health and Environment Department. My key responsibilities included industrial HSE inspection and auditing, developing and establishing of the Environmental Laboratory, medical waste, marine environment, food radiation and industrial hazardous waste management. I was the focal point for HSE related issues with the local and federal authorities. I also represented the Municipality at the Federal Environmental Agency for developing a national long term environmental strategy.

This is just a brief account of my career life.

How do you evaluate success?

To begin with, I think that success is a matter of spiritual and mental readiness. We as Muslims have great belief, norms and traditions, that are our values and which can inspire us to succeed. The lessons of the Holy Quran and the life, actions and sayings of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) can give us unparalleled lessons on how to be straightforward, how to be a role model for the change you preach, how raise your children and teach them to face life with absolute faith and dedication, how to treat your parents and be part of their lives at all times. I think these spiritual cornerstones are essential for success, whether in daily life or in our careers. We should then complement this with extensive reading, learning from our own experience and from others’ mistakes and engaging with experienced people.

Achieving your own goals, having a happy and healthy family and contributing and appreciating the success of your own country, like the enormous and continued success of my country the United Arab Emirates, are paramount to a successful life.

What do you think is important about your new job?

FERTIL provides a very healthy environment and supportive leadership, which gives us the morale to go beyond good success by being creative, innovative and utilizing past experiences. I feel that FERTIL places more focus on Operation and HSE excellence, Sustainability

and CSR, which encourages us all to further improve and develop these areas in an integrated and realistic approach. Of course, this puts extra responsibility on my shoulders as a leadership member to achieve FERTIL’s strategic business objectives and targets.

What are the prime objectives and areas of focus of the HSE Division?

The Corporate HSE Division’s main strategy and objectives are; to maintain a high level of HSE awareness among all employees, contractors and suppliers at all levels; reinforce the HSE mindset, culture and practices supported by visible leadership and management commitment through suitable and effective HSE systems, programs like the 10 Golden Safety Rules and of ADNOC HSE Codes of Practices; to evaluate and adapt recommendations and lessons learnt from our peers’ industries best practices and achievements; compliance with all legal, audits and insurance requirements; collaborations with HSE, Sustainability and CSR Associations requirements, such as the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA, Responsible Care), Arab Fertilizer Association (AFA) and the International Fertilizer Association (IFA).

The CHSE Division will also provide strategic and technical HSE advice and assistance to all business and operation lines and ensure that they remain focused on HSE and sustainability requirements and practices and maintain their implementation to achieve HSE Excellence. Central to the Division’s role are other areas including crises and risk management, process safety, energy management, quality control and assurance as well as Emiratization.

What changes you would like to make in the HSE Division?

FERTIL has so far done an excellent job on CHSE. However, I would like to further review and develop an organization allocated with specialized competent resources that support CHSE and sustainability policies and strategy to fulfill FERTIL’s business growth and enhance FERTIL’s Integrated Management System, IMS, Operation and HSE excellence and business continuity. We should also ensure clarity and accountability in terms of CHSE and sustainability objectives and requirements in the Head Office and at the production site and review all HSE and Sustainability documentation incorporating new requirements, improvements and responsibilities changes.

In brief, we should go beyond FERTIL’s current achievements, to be leaders in HSE, sustainability, CSR contribution and performance and make FERTIL a more sustainable organization that everyone is proud to be a part of and ensure that it remains a trusted stakeholder and valued contributor in society.

OverviewLearning and Development is a key management function and an integral part of the Emiratization Policy of ADNOC which has become a strategic partner for the UAE government in employing UAE Nationals across the country. This commitment is part of a human capital strategy of supporting the development of staff thereby enhancing the overall level of competencies and, in turn, the performance of the company.

In line with these objectives, the T&CD strategy for FERTIL provides learning and development opportunities for the company’s staff, with emphasis on UAE Nationals, to develop their performance to the required standard of competence in order to effectively contribute to the company’s business needs.

Strategic Direction The Training and Career Development Strategy seeks to systematically link learning and development activities with the company’s competency framework and business needs and to establish priorities and plans for activities and resources. The strategy is based on the

belief that learning is a continuous process rather than a set of separate training courses. It sets the direction for creating a learning culture; the characteristics of which are self-managed learning, not instruction, long-term capacity building not short-term fixes and empowerment not supervision.

Vision

To create an inspirational and innovative learning and development culture which is vital to FERTIL’s success.

Mission Ensure that the T&CD Department operates in accordance with best practice, maximizes in-house learning capability, supports innovative and effective training methodologies to staff development and contributes to continuous improvement in human performance in FERTIL.

Statement of Purpose To encourage and enable our people individually and collectively to capitalize on the wealth of their talents and capabilities in pursuit of the FERTIL’s mission, vision, values and goals.

Training and Career Development (T&CD)

23

Underlying Principles The Training and Career Development Strategy is based on the following guiding principles:

• T&CD will be based on identified needs following a comprehensive training needs analysis.

• T&CD will be integrated with the performance management process.

• T&CD will take account of the company’s business objectives.

• T&CD will be delivered on a value for money basis.

• The use of shared resources will be maximized – human, financial, software and physical resources.

• A selective, focused and practical approach will be taken in assessing the impact of learning.

• Learning will be focused on the development of the necessary competencies to enable individuals to perform to the best of their ability.

Training and Development Evaluation Reaction level: This level of evaluation assesses the reaction of participants to the program – what they thought and felt about the effectiveness and quality of the training, speakers, venue, etc. All programs will be evaluated at this basic level. Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation or reaction sheet at the end of each course. The criteria to be assessed should be determined in advance and may include the quality of the course, learning objectives, course material, trainers, facilities, etc. Aspects of the training which fall below par should be reviewed and amended, as appropriate.

Learning level: The second level measures the learning – the resulting increase in knowledge or capability. A significant number of training programs should be evaluated at this level to measure the extent to which participants have increased their knowledge and enhanced their skills in line with the learning objectives. Assessments can be made through individual pre and post course tests, question and answer sessions and group exercises.

New T&CD InitiativesAgro-Chemical Industry EventsThe Training and Career Development Department has announced a selected list of Agro-Chemical Industry Events for 2015. The purpose of these events is to promote chemical manufacturing technologies and

services and to exchange knowledge and experience on current and future industry development.

The benefits of participation in these events can be summarized in the following:

1. Offers rich opportunities for participants to exchange views on key issues facing the fertilizer industry.

2. Share best practices, latest industry trends, current thinking and future direction of the industry.

3. Contributes valuable information on the forces that influence the industry’s operating environment.

4. Provides a global platform to engage in networking and enhance their business market opportunities and industry outreach.

Web-Based LearningIn an effort to promote “anywhere, anytime” learning opportunities for FERTIL staff in 2015, the Training and Career Development Department has announced a program of Webcast Events; a series of informational programs that are available for 24/7 access to conveniently meet your learning and development needs.

Certified Supervisor (CS®) CertificationThe Certified Supervisor (CS) course prepares students to be supervisors in a challenging modern workplace. It is based on the premise that organizational variables, including diversity in the workforce, computer and communication technology and the design of organization structures, are constantly changing. Overall, this program focuses on discussing important supervision concepts and providing fundamental skills necessary for applying these concepts. Students will learn the critical role of a supervisor in an organization and the abilities needed to be successful. The CS exams are taken online through the ICPM e-Learning Center. Exams are graded immediately and results are reported as pass or fail.

Certified Manager (CM®) CertificationThe CM certification consists of three modules:

Management Skills I: Foundations of Management

Management Skills II: Planning and Organizing

Management Skills III: Leading and Controlling

Each module includes a study manual, access to the ICPM e-Learning Center, practice exams and a certification exam. The CM certification is earned by passing three challenging CM exams which assess management competency. The CM exams are taken online through the ICPM e-Learning Center.

What is CAMS?CAMS is a system that was established to ensure that valid and reliable systems and standards are in place to ensure that staff are competent to discharge their responsibilities in a safe and effective manner. One of ADNOC’s objectives is to have a competent workforce. It is the policy and objective of Management to ensure that all staff performing critical roles are competent, in accordance with the competency standards and assessment criteria for each discipline. Performance on the job will be assessed against agreed standards for the specific job grade in any given discipline.

Why CAMS?CAMS was established by the ADNOC E&P Directorate to assure the competence of all newly hired graduates in their early development period. This was based on the need to meet the following business requirements:

1. Significant business growth. 2. Significant number of people retiring over the next 5

years. 3. Market limitation in providing qualified UAE National

candidates. 4. Aging facilities. 5. Large new projects. 6. Ambitious Emiratization targets.

All of the above requirements indicate the need to have a structured system in place to ensure that we have a competent and motivated workforce in place.

CAMS provides new graduates with a very clear “road map” for development during the early years of their careers. There is a strong focus on achieving consistency across the E&P companies in areas such as competency standards, salary & grade progression, assessment of competence, coaching, etc.

CAMS Organizational Readiness in FERTILThe Competency Assurance Management System (CAMS) will be applied across FERTIL to facilitate the development and implementation of technical and behavioral competences for the company’s UAE National developees. This system will ensure that all developees are systematically and comprehensively developed to perform their assigned job to the level required in the industry.

In order to support this, a list of certified CAMS training programs have been developed to set the foundation and the preparation for the CAMS project which will be

ready for full implementation by 2016.

Safety First: The first thing that you should ensure well ahead of time is the safety of your trip. Consider the following necessary steps:

• Take your vehicle to a service station for a complete mechanical and electrical check-up.

• Make sure you take with you a complete tool kit, a torch and spare oil cans for any emergency failures.

• Check the tires of your vehicle (including the spare) and make sure they are in excellent condition.

• Have enough sleep before starting your trip and if you have a family member who can drive, give them the wheel to have some rest.

• Use the GPS and download and learn to use the latest mobile tracking applications to communicate any emergency.

Make it fun as well! Now that the safety precautions are taken care of, try to think of the aspects that make your trip with your family an exciting experience. You may want to consider the following ideas:

• Make sure you take your and your family’s favorite recordings, be they music, comedies or any other entertainment that doesn’t distract the driver.

• As highway diners may not be up to standards in terms of health and safety, you would do better prepare home-made snacks and foods for your trip, making sure they are well stored during the trip.

• A long land trip using your family car can be a great occasion for the family to enjoy a cozy and relaxed get together, with lots of fun and warm interactions.

Having taken care of all these requirements, the only thing that remains is for you and your family to enjoy your great trip home!

Wish you a safe trip!

Tips for Trips

Making Your Car Trip Safe and Fun

Booking air tickets for you and your family to spend your vacation in your home country can be quite expensive, especially in the high season when everybody wants to reach home and, if you happen to have a big family, air travel will certainly be a burden on your budget.

Expatriates from several countries in the Middle East region can avoid this difficulty by opting to go home using their own cars. This option has the extra benefit of having their own car with them during the vacation, which will spare them internal transportation or rent-a-car costs.

The following are some tips for a safe and fun long car trip with your family.

TIPS

Four Tips for Your Food Safety

Many direct and indirect diseases are caused by exposure to harmful bacteria that can spread in the kitchen and threaten the safety of foods.

The following tips aim to ensure your safety against such diseases.

Wash Illness-causing bacteria can survive and spread around your kitchen, so it is important to wash the right way to prevent these bacteria from spreading to your food. What is the right way?

• Wash hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water.

• Wash surfaces, cutting boards, dishes and cooking utensils with hot soapy water after each use to prevent bacteria from spreading throughout the kitchen.

• Sanitize sponges and replace frequently.

• Wash produce under running tap water, but not meat, poultry or eggs.

SeparateBacteria can spread through cross-contamination. This occurs when raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs come in contact with ready-to-eat foods like bread and vegetables, so keep them separate.

• When handling raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs, always use separate cutting boards, plates and utensils from ready-to-eat foods.

• Never place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs.

• While shopping at the grocery store, keep raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs separate from all other ready-to-eat foods in both the shopping cart and during bagging.

• Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs separate in the refrigerator to prevent bacteria from spreading and the juices from dripping on ready-to-eat foods.

CookFood is safely cooked when it reaches a high enough internal temperature to kill the harmful bacteria that causes food poisoning. While many think they can tell when food is “done” simply by checking its color and texture, there’s no way to be sure it’s safe without following a few important but simple steps.

• Use a food thermometer. Food thermometers are extremely important as they are the only way to ensure food is cooked to a safe minimum internal temperature. To find which temperature to cook meats and other foods, you can consult “Is My Food Safe?” app. on Apple Store.

• Bacteria multiplies quickest when in the “danger zone,” between 5°C to 60°C, so keep food out of this range. Keep food hot after cooking, so it doesn’t fall below 60°C. Use a heat source like a chafing dish, warming tray or slow cooker to keep food from cooling.

• Reheat leftovers thoroughly to 75°C.

RefrigerateCooling foods keeps them out the “danger zone” - between 5°C and 60°C - and slows the growth of illness-causing bacteria. Refrigerate promptly and properly to reduce your risk of food poisoning. How long can foods remain unrefrigerated?

• Perishable foods must be refrigerated at, or below, 5°C within two hours (only one hour if in weather over 30°C).

• Never thaw or marinate foods on the counter.

• Note expiry dates and dispose of expired foods.
