Nuclear Power.

Essential Question. Why have people become increasingly

paranoid and scared since the first atomic bomb dropped in 1945

Nuclear Power? Death North Korea

Nuclear Waste

Russia Cold War Hiroshima

Cancer Radiation Iraq

Manhattan Project Iran

History – WWII the first ever.

1940’s Manhattan Project First Atomic bombs were dropped on

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Cities Flattened 40,000 – 75,000 died Died from explosion and from radiation

after the initial explosion

History – Chernobyl Incident 1986 reactor accident caused 10,000

to 15,000 deaths More exposure to radiation than

Hiroshima bombs Radiation is still there up to this day 4000 cases of Thyroid cancer

Other International Issues: Cold War North Korea creating Nuclear Weapons War on Iraq Terrorists could use nuclear weapons

Why we SHOULD be afraidScientists have carried out several

experiments researching how radioactivity, compares to regular

diseases, how natural uranium in drinking water affects us, and how it affects

cancer.

Uranium in Drinking Water Studied an Aboriginal Community

where there are small doses of uranium in their drinking water

Found that the small doses of uranium intake through a 15 year period had little affect in increasing cancer likeliness (13 in 100,00)

BUT, the population studied is very small so isn’t very accurate

Techa River Cohort Between 1950 and 1960 radioactive waste

was thrown into techa river which greatly affected those who lived on the banks that internally and externally contacted the radioactivity.

Found breast cancer rates increased greatly. This is also a problem of Nuclear Waste,

however later on we will learn that in present day reactors, nuclear waste isn’t an issue

Highly Enriched Uranium HEU can be found in the ground around

the world Terrorists can easily access this material WWII atomic bombs had a very simple

mechanism which Terrorists can easily incorporate given they had the money

Although WWII Atomic bomb is weak and incomparable to present day Nuclear weapons, it can still flatten cities and cause great damage.

North Korea Only very recently did North Korea announce

a successful testing of an Atomic Bomb as powerful as the ones created in the Manhattan Project in WWII

North Korea broke U.N Security Council Rules U.S is demanding North Korea stop North Korea is only further isolating

themselves Yet at the same time posing a threat to

international security

On the flip side…A lot is being done to prevent further

incidents such as the Chernobyl Incident, and countries have signed on to treaties

and agreements

What has been done? Treaties have been signed:1. Nuclear non-proliferation treaty2. Limited Test Ban Treaty U.N Security Council are trying to

maintain order Countries are keeping Nuclear

Reactors safe from Terrorists

Nuclear Reactors Present day Nuclear Reactors have

guidelines Something like the Chernobyl Incident

will never happen again

Nuclear Waste Nuclear Waste is take care of very

safely nowadays The waste is isolated and left to decay

naturally After 99.9% of the radioactivity has

decayed they take the waste and use it productively (electricity etc.)

Analysis of danger of Radioactivity

Radioactivity and Cigs Scientists created realistic radioactive

situations and compared it to common diseases such as obesity, minor smoking and air pollution

Comparing particularly the survivors of the Chernobyl Incident

Found that such radioactive exposure is LESS harmful compared to previously mentioned common diseases.

The U.S and Russia The U.S and Russia has recently

decided to THROW AWAY 68 tonnes of Weapon Grade Plutonium

They are doing this to encourage other nations

The WGP will be taken to create electricity

Terrorists and HEU As previously mentioned it is not

difficult for terrorists to access HEU, but all nation’s military are protecting known sources and the U.S is encouraging them to hand the HEU over to be thrown away

Although it isn’t so difficult to create an atomic bomb

BUT Terrorists will need 2million USD to create one

Should we be AS scared as many people already are?

You just watched my presentation, you decide

OH and…If a nuclear bomb was to be dropped on our heads, we’d die so fast we wouldn’t feel anything :P sadistic? Yeah I know.
