Lab Exercises 00:

3ds Max + V-Ray basics

Lab Exercise 00-2

Render a “Teapot on a plane” scene in 3ds Max using V-Ray

Create a new Max file (in 3ds Max 2009 for using Vray plugin)

- Change current renderer to “V-Ray”

- Create a plane

- Make a primitive object - teapot

- Assign Vray materials using Material Editor

- Add Vray light(s)

- Render a scene

Render your final scene Store under your named folder

- Assign Renderer: Renderers

Type “M” for opening 3ds Max Material Editor

Click “Arch & Design” (current material) button

Choose “VRayMtl” for rendering by V-Ray

Vray parameters are shown

- Diffuse

- Reflection

- Refraction

Lab Exercise 00-3: Texture Mapping & Bump

in Vray & Mental Ray

Classic Bump Mapping vs. Displacement (Varies in 3d Tools)

Bump Map Displacement

Geometry of two spheres are

totally same – different maps

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bump_map_vs_isosurface2.png

Bump Mapping example using Vray

For better texture & material:

- Take pictures of your interest material

- Make bump map using Photoshop

- Assign your texture map & bump map

- Control number values

- Same to Mental Ray (Also Displacement)

How to make my own texture maps, for better visualizations

Vray bump mapping

I intentionally used this ugly map

to show you the impact of texture &

bump maps in real design

‘visualization’.

For better visualization:

- Fairly good geometric model

(no need to be heavy model)

- The best lights you can create

- The best texture maps & effects

Lab Exercises 01:

Non-uniform Surface Modeling by 3ds Max

Lab Exercises 01

Render a scene of your own “non-uniform curtain wall panel structure”

1. Create a primitive object such as a box, cone, cylinder, etc.

2. Freely edit surface using FFD box, Edit Poly etc.

3. Subdivide or Tessellate your surface

4. Inset by polygon using Edit Poly

5. Delete except structure and Shell it for making 3d

6. Edit using TurboSmooth or MeshSmooth etc. for making organic shapes

7. All modification should be stacked on Modifier tab so that edit back and forth

8. Create your own non-uniform / organic shaped curtain panel structure

9. At least 4 different models

Render your final scene Store under your named folder

Also store your *.max file under your named folder

Lab Exercises 02: Controlling Poly Size

Affordable files for better quality & better speed

Lab Exercises 02: Controlling Poly Sizes

How to control the LOD (Level of Detail) in terms of its geometric size?

1. Open StanfordDragon.max file – Raw geometric data

2. Enhance its Poly size using MeshSmooth or TurboSmooth

3. Clear Modifiers Stack – Convert it to Editable Mesh (or Poly) for the final geometry

1. Open StandordDragon.max file – Raw geometric data

2. Reduce its Poly size (and file size) using ProOptimizer (10 percent or similar)

3. Clear Modifiers Stack – Convert it to Editable Mesh (or Poly) for the final geometry

(4. Reuse: Import into other project)

Save Enhanced LoD dragon model (finalized geometry model) and its quick render

Store under your named folder

Save Reduced LoD dragon model (finalized geometry model) and its quick render

Store under your named folder

Level of Detail (LoD) in terms of geometric size

Hit the key “7”

to display total polys

Given size is 100,000 polys

Is it appropriate in its detail level?

100,000 polys

How to enhance its LoD? – General smoothing algorithms

- TurboSmooth

(Iterations)

- MeshSmooth

(NURMS, Classic…)

2,400,000 polys

How to reduce its LoD?

- ProOptimizer

20,000 polys

How to reduce its LoD?

100 dragons

Affordable size in its LoD

10,000 polys

Lab Exercises 03:

Fundamental Architectural Modeling in 3ds Max

1. Using Editable Poly

2. Using AutoCAD drawing plans

3. Using AEC Extended Geometry in 3ds Max

Lab Exercises 03: Architectural Modeling in 3ds Max

Architectural Modeling in 3ds Max: Various ways!

1. Using conventional way: Editable Poly

2. Using another convention: Imported AutoCAD file – floor plans

3. Using AEC Extended and Door, Window, etc.

4. Hybrid way: Using imported AutoCAD file & AEC Extended & Editable Poly

Import “Level 1 Floor Plan.dwg”

Choose appropriate layers – WALL and others only

Model 3d walls and architectural components in 3ds Max using a hybrid way

Finalize Level 1’s 3d model

Store under your named folder

KEEP IN MIND!! “Scale” & “Precision” for the architectural modeling

- Use millimeters unit setup

- Use “numbers” to extrude, slice, etc.

- Use snap tool (e.g. Vertex snapping to draw splines)

Import CAD file

Import AutoCAD floor plan file

- Check Units

- Choose Layer

Using AEC Extended – Wall, Door, Window, Foliage, etc.

Progress image

- Import CAD floor plan file

- Draw splines on top of CAD file, and extrude for making 3d walls

- Model 3d walls using AEC Extended Wall object, Foliage, etc.

- Slice plane – bridge walls for door openings in Editable Poly mode

- Various editing methods

Using AEC Extended – Wall, Door, Window, Foliage, etc.
