Chapter 8 – Functions and Graphing

1.6 – Ordered Pairs and Relations

Coordinate System

• A coordinate system is used to locate points. It can also be called a Cartesian system or coordinate plane.

• The coordinate system is formed by two number lines that meet at right angles at their zero points.

Ordered Pairs

• The first number is called the x-coordinate.

(x, y)

A(3, 6)• An ordered pair is

used to locate any point on a coordinate plane.

• The second number is called the y-coordinate.

Graph each ordered pair on a coordinate system.

• A(3, 4)

• B(0, 2)

• C(8, 5)

Name the ordered pair that names each point.

A relation is a set of ordered pairs.

• The set of x-coordinates is called the domain of the relation.

• The set of y-coordinates is called the range of the relation.

Graph

A relation can be shown in several ways.

Ordered Pairs

{(1, 2), (2, 4), (3, 0), (4, 5)}

1 2

2 4

3 0

4 5

Table

Express the relation {(1, 4), (2, 2), (3, 0), (0, 2)} as a table and as a graph. Then determine the domain and range.
