1 Samuel 18:1-9

(1 Sam 18:1-9)1After David had finished

talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he

loved him as himself. 2From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his

father's house.

3And Jonathan made a covenant with David

because he loved him as himself. 4Jonathan took

off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his

sword, his bow and his belt.

5Whatever Saul sent him to do, David did it

so successfully that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased

all the people, and Saul's officers as well. 6When the men were returning home after David had killed the

Philistine,

the women came out from all the towns of

Israel to meet King Saul with singing and

dancing, with joyful songs and with

tambourines and lutes. 7As they danced, they

sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David

his tens of thousands."

8Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him.

"They have credited David with tens of

thousands," he thought, "but me with only

thousands. What more can he get but the

kingdom?" 9And from that time on Saul kept a

jealous eye on David. (1Sam 18:1-9)

He became one

in spirit with David,

and loved him as himself.

One in spirit:The highest level of

relationship btw man and man, also, btw man and God.They have in spiritthe same insight

the same understanding

1.Spirit 24God is spirit, and his worshipers

must worship in spirit and in truth." (John 4:24)

4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deut 6:4-5)

2.Soul8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever

is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. (Phil 4:8-9)

3. Body23"Saul and Jonathan-- in life they

were loved and gracious, and in death they were not parted. They

were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. (2Sam 1:23)

you were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful

than that of women. 27"How the mighty have fallen! The weapons of war have perished!" (2Sam 1:26-27)

Why Jonathan became one in spirit

with David,

To the point that he loved him and

gave him his tunic, sword,

bow, and belt?

I. Both are soldiers of faith[Saul did whatever his hand

finds to do?]

1Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul's head and kissed him, saying, "Has not

the LORD anointed you leader over his inheritance? 2When you leave me today, you

will meet two men near Rachel's tomb, at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin.

I. Both are soldiers of faithThey will say to you, 'The donkeys you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried about you. He is asking, "What shall I do about

my son?"' 3"Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men

going up to God at Bethel will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another

three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine.

I. Both are soldiers of faith4They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from them. 5"After that you will go to Gibeah of God, where there

is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, tambourines, flutes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying.

I. Both are soldiers of faith6The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person.

7Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you. (1Sam

10:1-7)

Both are soldiers of faith9As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul‘s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. 10When they arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came upon him in power, and he joined in their prophesying. . . . .13After Saul stopped prophesying, he went to the high place. (1Sam 10:9-10, 13)

[Jonathan defeated Philistines at Micmash]

1One day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, "Come, let's go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not tell his father. . . 6Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, "Come, let's go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the LORD will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few." (1Sam 14:1, 6)

[David killed Goliath]45David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth,

I. Both are soldiers of faith

[David killed Goliath] and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands." (1Sam 17:45-47)

II. They all have healthy families14But show me unfailing kindness like that of the

LORD as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, 15and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family--not even when the LORD has cut off every one of David's enemies from the

face of the earth." 16So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May

the LORD call David's enemies to account." (1Sam 20:14-16)

III. David, a man after God’s heart

14But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a

man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people,

because you have not kept the Lord's command." (1Sam 13:14)
