TRANSCRIPT
!!!
December 5, 2014 Dear Parents or Guardians, Now that we have completed the first trimester of the 2014/2015 school year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on your child’s homework habits and make changes as needed. I hope the following homework guidelines and suggestions will provide more success in school and less stress at home! Homework is assigned to reinforce concepts learned at school and to provide additional practice of skills. In addition, it encourages responsibility, organization, and time management. The following time frames serve as guidelines for the amount of time your child(ren) should spend on homework each night: Kindergarten and First Grade-approximately 10 minutes Second Grade-approximately 20 minutes Third and Fourth Grade-approximately 30 minutes To help homework time be productive it’s important to establish good homework habits. Start by helping your child get organized:
• Use a calendar and write in due dates and test dates together. • Use assignment notebooks provided to 3rd and 4th graders and check them off when
they are finished. • Provide a consistent place and time to do homework. • Discuss homework assignments with your child before they get started. For example,
when will you study for your spelling test? What supplies will you need for your project? • Check on your child's progress by asking to look over math problems or offering to test
him/her on spelling words. If your child is having difficulties completing their homework, make sure he/she understands the homework instructions by reviewing them together. Suggest ways to make the work easier to finish. Think of yourself as a coach, guiding and cheering them on from the sidelines. Encourage them to do their best. If they continue to have trouble with instructions and are spending too much time on homework, contact their teacher. Let’s work together to make the time spent on homework a success! Sincerely, Vince Murray!

Ellen Correll, Superintendent correll.ellen@d46.org
Dear Consolidated School District 46 Community, I am writing this letter to help keep you informed of Illinois school funding reform that will have a negative impact on state revenues received by CCSD 46. There is a bill called SB 16 that was already approved in the Senate, and may now be gaining momentum in the House. According to the Illinois School Board of Education (ISBE) website, the impact for CCSD 46 could be a loss of $419,666 per year. Detailed information is available at www.isbe.net/efac. I have also included an additional fact sheet from ISBE with this email. SB 16 was the result of a report generated from the Senate Education Funding Advisory Committee, or EFAC. According to the report, the Senate EFAC was “created to propose a state education funding system that provides adequate, equitable, transparent, and accountable distribution of funds to school districts that will prepare students for success after high school.” This is an honorable goal, and one that I wholeheartedly support. However, I am concerned about the negative consequences for CCSD 46 and many others across the state. Here are some points to consider if you choose to contact our legislators: • The financial impact on CCSD 46 is $419,666 per year. In terms of teachers, this would be the equivalent of eleven new hired teachers. In terms of technology, this would be the equivalent of providing a Chromebook computer to all of the students in our K-4 buildings. • Legislative leaders continue to talk about shifting the normal costs of pensions to local school districts. This cost shift would place additional burdens on local taxpayers. • There are new mandates in the bill requiring districts to provide school-based rather than district-based accounting. This is an unfunded mandate and will require additional resources for compliance. • This legislation does not increase funding to educate children in Illinois, even though Illinois is ranked 50th in the country in state funding for schools. SB 16 will further stress the load for local taxpayers. State Senator – Melinda Bush email: info@senatormelindabush.com State Representative – Sam Yingling email: repsamyingling@gmail.com Sincerely, Ellen Correll Superintendent
Thank You’s What a great turnout! Thanks to all who came out for Movie Night to enjoy Mr. Peabody and Sherman. We hope you had a great time! A special thank you to Ms. Mayer, Ms. Miller, Ms. Lazarus and Ms. Faubert who helped with concessions and throughout the evening.

November 2014
Submit Commitment to Education Award Nominations Now! Each year, Foundation46 recognizes a member of the community for demonstrating a commitment to enriching and enhancing education and for understanding that it "takes a village" to educate our children properly. We encourage community participation in this process. If you have somebody in mind to nominate, please send a letter to d46foundation@gmail.com detailing how the individual fits the bill by March 1, 2015. A perpetual plaque has been hung in each of our schools and will be updated annually with the names of new recipients.
Arts Enrichment, and Student Grants Opportunities The foundation’s Arts Commission met with District 46 art teachers to distribute over $3,000 in funding for fine arts endeavors—which facilitates new programming students would not otherwise enjoy. For instance, students at Prairieview will soon learn weaving on a new loom!
Foundation46 also offers Enrichment Grants for students to offset the cost of participation in Science Olympiad and Fun Fluency Spanish immersion. We have already awarded grants to seven students for Fun Fluency this fall and will be awarding Science Olympiad grants very soon. If your family would benefit from financial assistance for the spring semester of Fun Fluency, we invite you to visit our website to complete an application.
Elmer’s Classroom Challenge Success! Congratulations to District 46 students, teachers, and staff for being one of the nation’s top collectors in the Elmer’s Classroom Cleanup Challenge through TerraCycle. Look for bins at your school to recycle Elmer’s Glue Products, Capri Sun and Honest Kids juice pouches.
Read the foundation’s complete November newsletter here.
Foundation46 is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit educational foundation. Our mission is to enrich and enhance the educational experience of every student in CCSD 46.
