The 18th annual State of the Region luncheon shines a spotlight on what’s happening in the
Lowcountry and throughout the state. One of the community’s

Island Mayor Drew Laughlin and Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka will
discuss important regional issues, providing attendees with
an opportunity to hear leaders address concerns that impact
business, tourism and our quality of life.
SC Business Leader Darla Moore, State of the Region keynote speaker 2012, fielded questions from regional press on business in South Carolina.

Warmer rooms. Steaming showers. When your home has natural gas, every day can be the ultimate housewarming. Natural gas offers exceptional comfort, convenience and energy savings year round.
Faster heating. A natural gas furnace warms a home faster with heat up to 25 degrees warmer than electric heat pumps.
Abundant hot water. A natural gas water heater heats water about twice as fast as most electric models, and provides faster recovery and seemingly endless supply.
Higher efficiency. Natural gas furnaces and water heaters are more energy efficient, economical to operate and durable compared to electric models.
Come visit Liberty Point in the Town of Port Royal, SC and see the energy advantage of natural gas. Visit sceg.com/value or call 1-866-523-8242 to learn more.
*Annual energy savings are calculated based on a home with natural gas for heat and water heating.

in the Lowcountry
The Lowcountry momentum continues with JetBlue’s announcement it will begin daily non-stop
flights to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport
from New York’s JFK airport on February 13, 2014.
“JetBlue brings value, competitive fares, additional
flight options and a stellar reputation for customer
service,” said Bill Miles, chamber president and CEO.
“It’s a winning combination for both Savannah and
Hilton Head Island travelers, residents and the business
community.”
Airline recruitment is a long-term process that
evolves over time. Your chamber, in partnership with
Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport executives
and the Savannah Chamber/CVB, worked hard to make
the case that our region is a destination worth flying
to. It would not have happened without the cooperative
efforts and public/private partnership that crossed state
lines.
Over 11 million passengers came through JetBlue’s
T5 terminal at JFK last year and more than 50% of all
passengers who fly into the Savannah/Hilton Head
International Airport are headed to our area.

The Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance has earned the distinction of being among the
premier signature automotive events in the nation.
Celebrating its 12th annual festival, with its four signature events, there’s something exciting for everyone
to enjoy. Chamber members will receive an exclusive rate for the motoring festival by purchasing tickets at
hhimotoringfestival.com with the chamber only promotional code 2013cde15.
The Motoring Festival and the grand finale, the Concours d’Elegance will be held on October 25 through November
3, featuring a new world-class backdrop, on the 18th green of Port Royal Golf Club. Carolyn Vanagel, president of the
festival, gives us a preview of what’s in store.
CBM: New year, new location. How has the event developed to meet the demands of our growing community and the flourishing community of car enthusiasts?
VANAGEL: We are very excited to enter the next chapter of the Hilton Head Motoring Festival at Port Royal Golf Club on the Planter’s Row Course. We are now able to create larger and more elaborate exhibits, offer exhibitors a golf course setting and provide out of town spectators easy access to a world-class resort.
CBM: What sets this event apart as a unique complement for our area’s appeal as a tourism destination?
VANAGEL: The festival has a unique branding strategy of not only showcasing world-class automobiles, but offering an array of exhibits that appeal to the lifestyle traveler, with many “motoring”events offered by the community including themed dinners, gallery exhibits and musical entertainment all picking up on the automotive theme.
We are seeing the impact of our campaign “A week you will never forget” as close to 20% of our visitors stay 9 days or more. Our goal is to build on Motoring Festival Week and continue to increase the number of visitors staying for longer periods of time.
CBM: What’s new and exciting this year? Any special celebrities and exhibits not to be missed?
VANAGEL: It is amazing how many nationally-known collectors are coming to our event. We are honoring two well-known Concours exhibitors with special awards and folks will love this year’s “Life on the Beach” exhibit with everything from old Dune Buggies to an original VW van with peace symbols.
We’ll have 62 years of our honored marque, Porsche represented with Hurley Haywood, legendary Porsche race driver as honorary chairman and Jens Walther, president, Porsche Motorsports. Our new Gatsby collection is sure to be one of our most popular new attractions featuring vehicles representing the extravagance of that decade.
CBM: Tell us about some of the initiatives you are doing that support non-profit organizations in the Lowcountry area?
VANAGEL: Our charitable arm, Driving Young America, is a fund focused on raising money for local children’s charities that provide resources for the event. We support over 12 local charities and have donated over $200,000 to these organizations and provide scholarships for kids interested in the automobile industry. We are partnering this year with Hilton Head Food & Wine Festival by offering a premium ticket for folks who want to attend both events.
CBM: Ferrarri, Rolls Royce or other? If you had to choose your all-time favorite model of choice, which would it be?
VANAGEL: I love my red MINI Cooper Clubman. That said, I enjoyed sitting behind the wheel of that beautiful Triumph and put me in that Gatsby
Duesenberg that we will have here and I would be happy! Those were the days.
