Rich Hill could debut for Dodgers against Giants next week
Andy McCullough
After two weeks of false starts, the Dodgers are hopeful the wait for Rich Hill’s debut could end next week.
Hill will pitch a simulated game on Thursday in Arizona to test the blister on his left middle finger. Manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the “possibility” that Hill could pitch when the San Francisco Giants come to Dodger Stadium for three games starting on Tuesday.
The Dodgers will re-evaluate if Hill can complete his assignment on Thursday. The team scheduled the outing for the evening so the conditions are more agreeable for Hill’s hand. He has not faced batters since a five-pitch outing on July 17 with Oakland.
The blistered popped that day, and the Athletics placed Hill on the disabled list. The Dodgers traded for him, anyway, in a package that also included new right fielder Josh Reddick. Since joining the Dodgers, Hill has already had his scheduled debut cancelled twice.
But when he takes the mound, Hill could be the best pitcher on the roster. He posted a 2.25 earned-run average in 14 starts for Oakland, and struck out 10.7 batters per nine innings.
Liberatore back, but not activated
Adam Liberatore, the left-handed reliever who forms part of the bridge to closer Kenley Jansen, met the team in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

If Yasiel Puig were hitting to his capabilities, the Dodgers probably never would have sent him to the minor leagues. For all the talk of his coachability and his need to be a better teammate, teams tend be far more tolerant of players whose bats strike fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers.
If his first seven games at triple-A are any indication, Puig has not lost that capability. He is batting .481, with 13 hits in 27 at-bats. He has hit three home runs and struck out once. His OPS is 1.474.
The Dodgers are not likely to jump to any grand conclusions based on seven minor league games. Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts noted the other day that triple-A pitching is not what it used to be, with young starters often promoted from double-A to the major leagues, and with the use of seven-man and eight-man bullpens in the majors requiring extra relievers that otherwise would be at triple-A.
For their part, in the 13 games since they announced that Puig would be demoted, the Dodgers are averaging 5.2 runs per game — a small sample size, to be sure, but up from their season average of 4.5.

Power surge continues for Dodgers in 7-2 win over Phillies
Andy McCullough
Adrian Gonzalez bashed a pair of home runs as the Dodgers rolled the Phillies, 7-2.
The victory improved the Dodgers’ lead over the still-reeling Giants to 1 1/2 games in the National League West. The Dodgers (67-52) can finish off a sweep of the Phillies on Thursday evening.
Justin Turner also went deep as the offense battered the overmatched Philadelphia staff. Scott Kazmir left the game in frustration, able to last only five innings, but rookie reliever Grant Dayton ended a bases-loaded threat in the sixth to keep the Dodgers in front.
Kazmir gave up eight hits, including three in the sixth inning, when he could not get a man out. He yielded two runs. The performance fit within the narrative of his first season as a Dodger: He did not perform particularly well, but at least he was on the mound.
One day last week, a conversation with Brett Anderson created a fitting visual for the staff’s unrest. A reporter mentioned to Anderson that the only regular members of the group were Kazmir and Kenta Maeda. “After that . . . “ Anderson said as he pantomimed flipping a coin skyward.
Reliability matters to Manager Dave Roberts. He acknowledged the unevenness of Kazmir’s performance while still praising him for taking the ball during each turn through the rotation.
“Kaz has not hit his stride yet,” Roberts said before the game. “I think that he’s battled some physical things. But the one thing you can say about Kaz is he’s posted. And in a year when we’ve had a lot of instability with players and pitchers, he and Kenta have been very consistent.”
Kazmir tiptoed through the first few innings. The Phillies uncorked a series of line drives, including an RBI double by shortstop Freddy Galvis after Kazmir issued a leadoff walk in the second.
The Dodgers launched four home runs on Tuesday. Another on Wednesday gave them the lead. A single by Turner and a walk by Josh Reddick set the stage for Gonzalez in the fourth.
On the mound stood Phillies starter Jake Thompson. He turned 22 this year. Wednesday was the third start of his career. When Gonzalez worked a 3-1 count, Thompson tried to overpower him with a 91-mph fastball. Gonzalez sent a laser into the right-field seats.
The exit velocity of Gonzalez’s shot turned heads. The height of the next homer drew attention. After a single by Corey Seager, Turner scraped the sky in left field with a two-run blast in the fifth. Thompson thought it was a fly out. He pointed upward as the ball traveled to left. It cleared the fence by a few feet, plenty of space for Turner’s 22nd homer of the season.
Kazmir waded into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. He gave up a one-out infield single to former Angel Peter Bourjos. With two outs, he could not command his fastball against second baseman Cesar Hernandez, and got betrayed by his cutter against outfielder Odubel Herrera. He issued consecutive walks to load the bases.
The Dodgers found a way to escape. Kazmir spotted a fastball at the knees of outfielder Aaron Altherr, who hit a grounder up the middle. Chase Utley scooped the ball and stepped on second base for the third out.
Kazmir would not record another out. Philadelphia first baseman Tommy Joseph parked Kazmir’s first pitch of the sixth, a curveball at the shins, in the second deck. With the solo shot still reverberating off the empty seats, Kazmir yielded a pair of singles. Roberts removed him for Dayton.
The bases were soon loaded after Dayton gave up a single to shortstop Freddy Galvis, who had hit a crucial homer off him last week at Dodger Stadium. But Dayton recovered to record three fly outs to strand the three runners.

Dodgers lineups: Scott Kazmir has had a good season -- just by showing up
By BILL PLUNKETT / STAFF WRITER
PHILADELPHIA -- Left-hander Scott Kazmir will take the mound for the freshly-first place Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park tonight with a 4.44 ERA (his highest in four seasons of the second chapter in his career). The Dodgers have won just won more of his starts than they've lost (12-11) and he is averaging less than 5 2/3 innings per start, his lowest since 2013.
But sometimes just showing up for work is the most important thing.
"I think Kaz has not hit his stride yet," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I think he's battled some physical things. But the one thing you can say is -- he's posted. In a year when we've had instability with players and pitchers, he and Kenta (Maeda) have been very consistent in being able to post. That level of consistency has been huge for us.
"I know Scott expects more from himself, as we do. I expect a great run from him to finish the season. But just to post every fifth or sixth day, whatever it is, has been huge for us."
It's not surprising that was the first thing Roberts thought of when asked to assess Kazmir's first season with the Dodgers.
The veteran left-hander and Maeda have indeed been the only constants in a constantly-changing rotation. The Dodgers have not used the same five-man rotation twice in a row since mid-June. Kazmir and Maeda are the only starters on the Dodgers' active roster to make more than 10 starts (Clayton Kershaw made 16 before he went on the DL).
Tonight's lineups:

Adrian Gonzalez hits two HRs as Dodgers beat Phillies to extend lead in NL West
By BILL PLUNKETT / STAFF WRITER
PHILADELPHIA – The Dodgers are fattening up on more than cheesesteaks these days.
Adrian Gonzalez reprised Chase Utley’s two-home run, five-RBI night – minus the curtain calls – as the Dodgers made themselves comfortable in first place, beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-2, Wednesday night.
Earlier in the day, the San Francisco Giants lost – dropping their record to a major-league worst 9-21 since the All-Star break – allowing the Dodgers to stretch their lead in the National League West to 11/2 games with their victory at Citizens Bank Park. It is the first time the Dodgers have had more than a one-game lead atop the division since May 7.
“We’ve got to keep winning games. We don’t settle just because we woke up in first place,” Gonzalez said. “We keep pushing, keep trying to win series, win one game at a time. It feels good to be in first place. It feels great.
“But for the most part, the season didn’t end last night. We’ve still got a lot of games. We’ve got nine games left with the Giants. We’ve got a lot of games we’ve still got to win.”
If more of them were against the Phillies, that would not be a problem.
The Dodgers have played the Phillies five times in the last 10 days and have scored 42 runs in those games, hitting 14 home runs, including seven in the first two games of this series in Philly.
That has just added fuel to an offensive surge that started weeks ago.
Before the All-Star break the Dodgers batted .241 as a team, averaged 4.2 runs per game and hit 99 home runs in 91 games – one every 30.8 at-bats. Since the All-Star break, they have scored 156 runs, second in the National League only to the Colorado Rockies (who have played five more games), averaging 5.6 per game while batting .281 and hitting 41 home runs – one every 25 at-bats now.
“One through eight in the lineup, it’s just great at-bat after great at-bat,” said Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner who hit his 22nd home run of the season Wednesday. “The length of our lineup is impressive right now. It’s tough to pitch to. Everyone 1 through 8 can hit the ball out and do some damage. It’s fun to come to the park every night knowing we can hang a number up there.”
With so many hot hitters in the lineup, Gonzalez has quietly taken his usual place among them.
His three-run home run in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to 10 games. It was his first home run in 72 plate appearances. He didn’t have to wait as long for the next one. He hit a two-run home run off Phillies reliever Edubray Ramos in the seventh.
Though his power production is on a career-low pace, Gonzalez has been one of the hottest hitters in the National League since June 27, batting .349 over his past 42 games including 18 for 39 (.462) with runners in scoring position.
“I think early on he was a victim to trying to out-think things as far as beating the shift,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “There was a point about five weeks ago where he decided to get the head (of the bat) to the baseball and get the ball in the air and pull the baseball a little more.
“He’s hit some balls well that didn’t go out at home. A ballpark like this is hitter-friendly and he’s been rewarded.”
Gonzalez has never lost his ability to turn on a theory and swat it away. He denies there was any over-thinking caused by the shift. He traces his power outage to early May when he received an epidural injection to treat a pinched nerve that has caused persistent problems in his back and neck.
“For the most part, my body and my health got good and I was able to get back in my legs so I was able to take better paths to the ball,” Gonzalez said. “I had that epidural in early May. It took me about a month to feel fully healthy and strong again. Right around mid-June, my body started feeling good and I could get back to figuring out where my stance was so I could figure out where my swing was.”
With the offense doing the heavy lifting once again, that left very little for Scott Kazmir (10-6) to do to earn the win. He fought with his “tempo and rhythm” all game, he said, and was done for the night without retiring a batter in the sixth.
Rookie reliever Grant Dayton stranded the bases loaded in that sixth and combined with Joe Blanton, Jesse Chavez and Josh Fields to retire 12 of the final 14 Phillies batters.

Dodgers' Josh Reddick finds solace in some good at-bats
By BILL PLUNKETT / STAFF WRITER
PHILADELPHIA – Josh Reddick knows what you’re thinking – because he's heard a lot of it out loud.
“Oh, yeah – I know it’s coming from every side. They made this trade and the numbers don’t show anything,” said Reddick who is 9 for 53 (.170) with only one extra-base hit since he was acquired along with Rich Hill from the Oakland A’s in exchange for three promising minor-league pitchers at the non-waiver trade deadline. “At home, they were yelling at me about bringing (Yasiel) Puig back.”
That won’t be happening (despite the fact that Puig has found Triple-A pitching much easier to handle than the major-league variety). But for now, Reddick will have to resort to the defense of slumping hitters through time immemorial – he is hitting the ball hard but not getting positive results to show for it.
Tuesday’s game in Philadelphia was a prime example. While the Dodgers were pounding the Phillies, 15-5, Reddick was “the guy taking an O-fer in a boat race” despite flying out to the center field wall in one at-bat (Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera made a fine running catch) and hitting a hard ground ball up the middle in another (that shortstop Freddy Galvis made a sliding play on to throw Reddick out).
Reddick can’t help but think luck has lined up against him since he joined the Dodgers a little over two weeks ago, replacing Puig as their primary right fielder.
“It seems that way,” he said. “It could be frustrating but I feel like I’m having quality at-bats and hitting the ball hard most of the time. It would be worse if I was striking out one or two times a game or rolling over everything and hitting weak grounders. I feel like I’m putting together good at-bats. It (stinks) but I’m not going to be the guy sulking about individual stuff when the team is in first place.
“I’ll come around.”
Reddick acknowledged that he was motivated to make a good first impression on his new team but didn’t feel that morphed into putting too much pressure on himself to perform – even as he went 1 for his first 20 in a Dodgers uniform.
“I don’t think so,” he said. “After the first few games, it just felt like a new uniform, new ballpark but still playing baseball. Hopefully, I’ll get a two-week period where everything turns around and the baseball gods start liking me again.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he has seen signs at times – like Tuesday’s game – that the frustration is getting to Reddick. But Roberts backs up Roberts’ assertion that he is having quality at-bats and has no hesitation about keeping Reddick in the middle of the lineup..
“You see guys swinging the bat well and scoring runs and you want to join in the party. You want to make a good impression on the new ballclub and he hasn’t yet,” Roberts said. “But I think for me, just to see his competitiveness, the way he fights every at-bat …it’s more about having him focus on the quality of at-bat rather than the result. I’ve always liked Josh as a player – offensively, defensively. There’s a reason I keep putting him in the lineup.
“Josh is here to help us win baseball games and as long as we’re winning I know that he can deal with some of the frustrations offensively that I know he’ll work through.”
HILL PLAN
If Reddick has struggled since he joined the Dodgers, he has a leg up on Hill – at least he’s playing.
The injured left-hander will try to take a step in that direction Thursday night. Roberts said the Dodgers are arranging a simulated game at the team’s training complex in Arizona for Hill. The game will take place at night in a controlled setting so that conditions will be “more conducive” to Hill not aggravating the blister issues on the middle finger of his pitching hand that have kept him out of action since July 17.
“After that, we’ll know more,” Roberts said.
Roberts ruled out Hill joining the Dodgers’ rotation during the current trip which runs through Monday in Cincinnati. He acknowledged that having Hill available to start one of the three games against the San Francisco Giants in Los Angeles next week was “a possibility.”
LEFTY COMING
Left-hander Adam Liberatore joined the Dodgers in Philadelphia Wednesday after making two appearances on a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment.
Roberts said Liberatore will be activated from the DL on Friday unless a bullpen need arises before then.
