Brighten the Corner Where You Are and You Will Light the World
“Brighten the Corner Where You Are and You Will Light the World”*
Dear Friends,
We live in a world that sometimes seems to be spinning out of control. We find ourselves thinking, “I’m just one person, what can I do to truly make things better?” In 1913, a public school teacher named Ira D. Ogden wrote the lyrics to a gospel hymn entitled “Brighten the Corner Where You Are” and, in so doing, reminded all of us that we can have a positive impact on the lives of others even in the smallest of ways. Nothing makes it easier to put that sentiment into practice than coming to the LLDH Home every day and working alongside people who understand what it means to love and respect each other. Sue and I are tremendously thankful for the kindness and compassion with which the Home’s employees perform the work of caring for low to modest income seniors of Washington, DC. We are equally thankful to all of you who, through your heartfelt support of our mission and generous financial contributions, make this Home the bright corner that it is.
So let us take this thought one step further, though we certainly can’t claim authorship as that belongs to a well-known American writer who once wrote “Brighten the corner where you are and you will light the world.” Together, we can continue to brighten this corner we call the Home. Together, we can truly “light the world” right here on Western Avenue. Your continuing belief in our ability to meet the challenge of caring for those who can no longer care for themselves and willingness to make that belief a reality through your donations to our annual campaign make all the difference.
Sincerely,
L. Ward Orem, MA, LNHA Susan. M. Hargreaves, MSA, LNHA CEO Administrator

B R I G H T E N T H E CO R N E R W H E R E YO U A R EThe Home has a long history of making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve. As the only long term care facility in Washington, DC, exclusively caring for low income elders of the city, we stand alone in brightening the lives of many who might otherwise go without food, shelter, medications essential to their health, and opportunities for social interactions and recreational activities.
For those 150+ individuals who pass through the Home’s doors each year either in a residency capacity or as short-term rehabilitation clients, the services we offer in our corner remain vitally important to ensuring their overall wellbeing. Each program provided by the Home is integral to achieving our mission of empowering low and modest income seniors to live their lives to the fullest.
Please join with us as we move into our 78th consecutive year of serving the needs of one of the city’s most at-risk populations.
A N D Y O U W I L L L I G H T T H E W O R L DThe simplest acts of kindness — hugging someone to ease their pain, remembering a friend’s birthday, or thanking people who have made a lasting impression on your life — can bring smiles and, yes, sometimes tears to those on the receiving end of those acts.
Residents’ family members and friends, wherever you might reside, help us by sharing our story. In turn, those hearing our story often become supporters of the Home themselves and assist us in sustaining a strong base of donor support so critical to securing our future.
We share with you excerpts from just two of the letters of thanks the Home has received over the years; they speak far more eloquently than we can to how our bright corner can light the world.
F R O M O U R L E T T E R S“…there is great comfort in knowing that the Home still stands, that its commitment to our most treasured citizens remains unchanged by the passage of time, that members of the Home’s family… work quiet miracles – year after year – providing safety, quality care, and dignity to the vulnerable… I am aware that “quiet heroes” require no thanks, other than the privilege of sharing in the richness of the lives of the…residents… I do ask, however that you accept… (our) family’s sincere wish for… blessings… on your amazing staff and on the “treasures” for which you have been called upon to love.” (December 2009)
“On behalf of our dear Mother…, we would like to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to the LLDH staff… who have invested so dearly to create a warm and considerate environment. You are an amazing Team!!... From our visits and daily talks with Mom, we marvel at the extraordinary efforts of so many and the culture of kindness and caring that permeates the Home. The nursing staff has masterfully balanced carrying out their professional duties in ways that convey compassion and concern for their resident-patients and their families. We notice the attention to detail of the housekeepers and the cheery ladies in the dining areas who serve up smiles along with helpful assistance for those in need…. Both arriving and leaving, I’m always cordially greeted by the helpful and courteous telephone-receptionists. As her Family, we have such good feelings our Mother is in a loving and safe place. Most important, Mom feels the same way…she tells us often!! (Please) share this letter and our grateful appreciation and thankfulness to all those who contribute so much.” (May 2016)
