2020 GCE O LEVEL - RELEASE OF RESULTS

Opening Address

Mr Liu Earnler (Principal)

Congratulations!

The O-Level Exams are the result of years of hard work and perseverance.

Let’s celebrate our efforts regardless of the results.

Students,

• Today, there will be celebrations and happiness

• There may also be disappointment and tears

• Let’s be there for our friends today

Look out for each other –if your friends act ‘unusually’ …

If you think your parents will scold you, and you

want our help to call them, let us know.

Your friends Your friends

A short sharing about important ‘life lessons’:

Straits Times

5 Jan 2020

1. In Sec 3, for the first time, I was flunking maths and Chinese

spelling tests, my test papers coming back with angry red

marks and large blank spaces where I had skipped questions.

I lagged behind especially in the Sciences, falling into the

bottom 20 per cent band for a few terms.

2. I felt like an outsider in my class. While my brilliant

classmates showed off their near-perfect results, often shouting

loudly across the classroom, I shrunk back in my seat, trying to

hide my grades, which sometimes fell into the single digits.

3. Having anchored my identity on being a good student in Sec 1

and 2, I suddenly felt unmoored (= lost) at age 15 - if I was

no longer who I thought I was, how else could I define myself?

Yuen Sin wrote about her

memories of Sec 3 and 4:

4. That taste of failure at 15 was a turning point which

prompted me to search deeply within myself. Having

bounced back, I got used to facing setbacks.

5. In JC, I failed my General Paper at the Prelim

Exams. I was upset, but moved past it.

6. I applied successfully for a journalism internship

after an interview, despite my dismal GP results.

Ten years later, I am still writing for this newspaper.

7. I stopped stumbling along in the education system,

marching along to the same beat as my peers.

8. I learned to give weight to my own passions.

My fear of failure taught me how to fail.

Don’t worry if you didn’t get the results you want.

Don’t worry if you don’t get the JC / the poly course you want.

There are many paths to success (so don’t stress..)!

Key Messages for JAE1. Consider your course choice wisely

• 2019 Cut-off Points (COP) for the JCs/MI & Polytechnic courses can be found in 2020 JAE Booklet given.

• In the JAE, applicants are posted to a course based on merit according to their net aggregate scores, taking into account the various bonus points eligible for (i.e. net L1R5 for JC course,

net L1R4 for MI course, net ELR2B2 for Polytechnics courses and net

ELB4/ELR1B3/ELR2B2 for ITE courses). • It is important that you should consider courses that are

comparable to your aggregate scores, for better fit and better chances of being admitted.

Key Messages for JAE2. Make full use of your 12 choices

• Make a considered decision of all 12 choices because there is a change that you will be posted to one of them.

• Do check that you qualify for the course you are applying for.

• If you do not use up the 12 choices, you are limiting the number of choice you have in where you could be posted.
