ADAPTIVE LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

THE GOOD

• A sophisticated LMS will adapt to your preferences and begin to deliver content in ways that better match how you learn.

THE TO BE NOTED

ADAPTIVE LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

“Google knows you better than you do.” “Google is turning you into the person it thinks you want to be.”

(For the record, so is Facebook.)

(2012)

LOCATION BASED INTELLIGENCE AND SERVICES• Campus tours• Lesson materials delivered remotely• Tracking class attendance• Language learning

MAKERSPACES• Minecraft, Virtual Worlds• Incubators (peer to peer learning; problem-solving)

Microchips in humans? It’s no longer IF .....

DEVICES that can be implanted in the brain are being trialled to treat seizures, pain, psychiatric conditions and Parkinson's disease. New electrodes - half a millimetre thick - are being designed to insert into the brain, detect abnormal brain activity and deliver instant treatment.

NMC 2016 Technology Outlook (Australian Higher Ed)

AFFECTIVE COMPUTING• Affective computing is the idea that humans can program machines to

recognise, interpret, process and simulate the range of human emotions.

Can we teach the machine?

ROBOTS AS CARERS

Over the last 30 years people have increasingly being more open about the idea of having a robot as friend or carer.

ROBOTS AS SEXUAL COMPANIONS

ROBOTS AS TUTORS

• Good Vibes - an app to help autistic people in their interpersonal relationships

• Tega: a tool (robot) for instructors to assess student comprehension and attention in real time

NETWORKED OBJECTS - THE INTERNET OF THINGS(a network of things)

• Tracking objects/monitoring information – wildlife, consumables, health, inventory management

DIGITAL LITERACY?• Finland has declared that cursive handwriting

will no longer be a requirement from 2017.However:• “Scientists decided to conduct a second

experiment in which these students would be given a week to review for the exam. The participants would be tested on simple facts as well as concepts, inferences, and applications of the material. Even after a week of review, the students who took notes in longhand were found to do significantly better than the other students in the experiment, including the fleet typists

However..... • Auditor’s comment:

“I suggest you steer away from collaborative assessment.”

THE PROBLEM:

"The dominant culture of education has come to focus not on teaching and learning, but testing...this...leads to a culture of compliance rather than creativity.“http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_how_to_escape_education_s_death_valley.html

TEACHING AND ASSESSING

NAPLAN: “It’s not the test that counts but the teaching that is critical ... and good teachers know this.”

Greg Whitby

CONCLUSION?

THE USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES DOES NOT IPSO FACTO RESULT IN INCREASED:

• COLLABORATION• COMMUNICATION• CRITICAL THINKING• PROBLEM SOLVING

IT IS STILL THE JOB OF THE TEACHER TO CRAFT CHALLENGING TASKS AND ACTIVITIES THAT CAN TRANSFORM LEARNING.

IT TAKES TIME AND IT TAKES HARD THINKING.

LET TECHNOLOGY DRIVE SOMETIMES!

MINDFUL USE OF TECHNOLOGY

• Net Smart - how to use Internet technology intelligently, humanely, and, above all, mindfully.

• INFOTENTION – surf with purpose; know why you’re there; have a goal!

ETHICS OF TECHNOLOGIES

technologies transform the minds and culture of their users

CC image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/librariesrock/6784435650/

IF WE CAN DO IT WE WILL.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY ALWAYS LAGS BEHIND

• VCRs, Internet, mobile phones, ipads were not invented with education in mind but they have become commonplace tools in educational delivery.

• Education co-opts popular technologies for its own use.• Robots, wearable technology, augmented reality WILL be part of educational delivery of the future – it’s up to you to show us HOW.
