The ghastly revelations of sexual abuse of at least a 1000 young people by some 300 priests and the subsequent coverups by the bishops of six dioceses in Central & Western Pennsylvania leaves me sad and ashamed in this week in which I observe my 45th anniversary. Were I without sin, I might be among those casting stones at those guilty of such grave crimes and sins. But such is not the case because I realize that save for the grace of God there go I. I hasten to add that by God’s mercy while I have not been a perpetrator of abuse against children and youth, I have struggled through much of my life with the deadly sins of pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and laziness. When I first felt as an odd thought that God was calling me to be a priest, I dared to hope he would provide me with the grace to counteract those sins with the “seven lively virtues” of humility, generosity, chastity, kindness, abstinence, patience, and diligence. I can say that God has poured out his grace upon me to allow me to make progress towards those virtues. I often feel weak and powerless but am ever ready to rejoice in his strength. Have mercy on me, O Lord, a sinner. Here are some facts that I feel did not come across clearly in the media coverage of the scandals:
• All the crimes cited in the report, save for two, occurred BEFORE 1990 and as far back as 1947.
• MOST OF THESE PRIESTS ARE DECEASED.
• Scant mention was made of the positive steps the leaders of the church have taken since the late nineties to provide Safe Environments for children and youth.
• Since 2002 when the bishops adopted the zero tolerance policy, the number of reported cases of clergy abuse is becoming rare.
What I have written above is in no way intended to minimize the horrific acts committed by priests who were ordained to be good and caring shepherds, nor to excuse the bishops who claimed to have covered up those crimes to “to protect the faithful from scandal.” But the vast number of priests in Pennsylvania and elsewhere were faithful to the promises they made to offer their lives in service to God and to his people. Despite all this, be assured that I am full of gratitude to you and all the people I have served over these past 45 years. Moreover, I am full of gratitude to God for being faithful to his resolve to make an ordinary sinner like me a saint. I regret that I have so many times failed to have cooperated with his audacious plan. But I’m not giving up. Instead I pray to continue giving in so that His will and not mine be done. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of priestly ministry. Thank you for your love and prayers!
THANK YOU,
LORD FOR 45
YEARS OF SERVICE

Raising children can be a challenging endeavor. We are excited about the opportunity to help you raise them as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our catechetical programs have as their chief objective to accompany the children on a journey of faith that makes it possible for them to become, over time, his faithful disciples. We believe that families that worship together every Sunday (barring illness or travel) and see to it that children participate regularly in discipleship formation classes will experience rewarding benefits. Classes are for all children in grades K-12 and registration is required for all those preparing for sacraments. Families that pray, worship, and learn together stay together.
We highly encourage all parents to participate in the Alpha course which we offer twice a year. For those who have already experienced Alpha, we encourage participation in one of our Small Discipleship Groups. Some of those groups may be held between the Masses on Sunday mornings.

PARISH NURSE POSITION
Parish Nurses are a relatively recent addition to the nursing profession, but are found today in countless churches across the country. They are Registered Nurses who have the capacity to practice a spiritual form of tender loving care. At St. Andrew’s this is a part-time position in which the parish nurse can arrange his or her own hours. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Jack by phone or email.
I first met Ted about ten years ago, shortly after he suffered the death of his wife of nearly 60 years. When he told me he had been a professional roofer all his life, I thought he might have been an angel sent by God to help us finally get our church roof straightened out. Since he was 80 I was not thinking that he would be actually getting up on the roof, but that’s exactly what he did on numerous occasions. Eventually we were able get it done right. Ted was loved by his 5 o’clock Mass friends and was a faithful member of the Friday morning “bulletin bunch”. Thanks, Ted, for being among us. May you rest in peace. A Memorial Mass will be announced soon. Ted chose to have his body donated for medical research.
