Althoughwearenowbetterinformedaboutthenegativeeffectsofalifeonline,thishasnotpreventedtechnologybecomingcentraltoyoungpeople’srelationships.Inmanyrespects,theuseoftechnologytocreate,connectandcommunicateonlineisapositivephenomenon.

Youngpeopletypicallymakeuseofavarietyofmethodsandplatformstocommunicatewithothersonline,makenewfriends,shareexperiencesandsupporteachotheremotionally.

But, the ‘DigitalFriendships’ report,publishedby theUKSafer InternetCentre (2018), states that‘more than two in five young people reported feeling anxious orworried in the pastweek aboutsomethingthathadhappenedonline’.

Whatperhapsissurprisingandthankfulisthat,accordingtothereport,youngpeoplerecognisethesechallengesanddesirethesupportoftheirfamilies,schoolsandpeersincreatingasafer,happierandmorerespectfulinternetforall.

‘Deepfakes’-Face-swappingsoftware

TheBBChavereportedonanalarmingnewtechnologyandAppcalled‘Deepfakes’.Thisalgorithmdriventechnologyenablescreatorstoedit,manipulateandexploitaperson’sfacialfeatures.TheAppallowsaperson’soriginalfacialimagetobedigitallyreplacedwiththatofanotherforanypurposeandwithinanycontext.Mostalarmingly,withouttheirknowledgeorconsent.

Thispresentsnewchallengesandrisksforusallwhenchoosingifandhowweshareouruniquepersonalimageandidentity,online.

Withoutpermission,‘Deepfakes’hasalreadybeenusedtoexploitandmisusethefacial imagesbelongingto‘celebrities’,tocreate‘fake porn’.
