Every project we do looks great, but let’s be realistic; There can be some hiccups on the road to greatness. Here are the top three reason that web projects go wrong and how to keep them from happening.

CONTENT ISSUES ARE KING1

Content creation is the #1 timeline killer

• Don’t write the web copy on your own if you can afford it.

• Or, concentrate on the major content, like Bios and Programs and hire someone to write the rest.

• Start writing before design.

• Write in batches or sections.

• Make sure you pay attention to Calls to Action, headlines and blurbs.

• Get someone else to edit.

CAPACITY IS A KILLER2

Web projects require a significant amount of time and people on our end and they requires time and people on the clients’ ends.

Solving staffing issues

• Web projects require lots of time and attention

• Make sure you have the staff to support the work

• ONE person should primarily manage the whole project

• That person should be able to make and execute decisions

• S/he should be the filter between the agency and the organization’s staff. Not just the shuffler.

• Pay attention from start to finish.

• A lot of key things get decided upon in the beginning, so make sure you understand and ask questions.

• Reworking sections of a website later can mean serious budget overages.

• Deadlines are there to help everyone stay on track — lots of people are working on the project.

• Make sure there aren’t any other huge internal projects going on that could interfere with this one.

• Everyone who needs to approve the project has to be involved from the beginning.

• The point person is a good communicator and is highly organized.

• Any assets, like hosting, domain names, and photography are available and sharable.
