Elena Vasi Petrovi AN OVERVIEW OF ANTIQUE AND EARLY BYZANTINE LOCALITIES IN THE

AREA OF TODAYS PIROT For the irst time Pirot was mentioned in the irst half of III century AD as Turres.

According to its name and scarce data which were available up to do the last decades of the last century, it was considered that it had no great signiicance, except as a station for replac-ing horses and resting of the passengers, which, in addition , had a simple watch tower as the only fortiication element. Historian of Justinian the Great, Procopius, in VI century AD mentions that the emperor Justinian fortiied little town Quimedava, which could have been located also at the site of todays Pirot, that is, its medieval fortiication wich was built in XIV century AD, and which survived until the present days.

Starting from 1970s, when, in the midst of great urbanization of Pirot, began digging up of wider surrounding of the medieval town, as well as construction of numerous buildings, until the most recent past, that is 2006, but also during the archeological works on the medi-eval fortress of Pirot, within the area covering round 100 hectares, which mainly comprise city blocks with residential and public buildings, several important objects were discovered, on the basis of which position of the fortiication and size of the suburb can be assumed.

This text has for its goal summing up all indings, for the purpose of creating possibil-ity for adequate research and presentation of those the most signiicant ones.
