Centre of Interest: Fairy tales and literature for children.
Duration: 9 sessions.
Teaching Objectives:
-to learn vocabulary related to fairy tales, literature for children and some festivities in
English-speaking countries.
-to learn how to form and use the Past Simple tense, as well as its corresponding temporal
expressions and adverbs.
-to express stories, events and facts in the past.
-to use the Internet as a means for learning.
-To learn how to pronounce the -ed endings when added to verbs to form the past.
Basic Competences:
1. Linguistic Competence. This unit focuses on teaching the Past Simple tense and its uses.
By means of this tense, students will be able to talk about events in the past in general. The
pronunciation of the verbal ending -ed is also taught.
2. Digital and Information Processes. Students will use my personal web page to do
activities and also to look for information.
3. Social and Civic Competence. Students will show respect to people and things in the past.
4. Competence and Attitudes to continue learning in an autonomous way. Students
contribute to increase the new vocabulary and begin to read autonomously.

Values:

Interdisciplinary:
The centre of interest in this unit is related to other subjects such as History and Geography, but also
Spanish Literature since students will learn some of the typical festivities in English-speaking
countries, as well as the most famous fairy tales for them.
Evaluation Criteria:
− referring to blocks 1 and 2: read and listen to texts from fairy tales and stories in the past, have
conversations about personal experiences in the past, write paragraphs using the past.
− referring to Language Awareness: use the past tense correctly, talk about past events,
pronounce correctly the -ed endings, and use new vocabulary when writing and speaking.

J.K.ROWLING
Joanne Rowling was born in July 31, 1965 in Chippin g Sodbury, South
Gloucestershire. She is a British fiction writer, m ost famous for being the author of
the Harry Potter fantasy series. Rowling's books ha ve gained international attention
and have won multiple awards. In February 2004, For bes magazine estimated her
fortune as 576 million pounds, making her the first person to become a billionaire
(in terms of U.S. Dollars) by writing books. Rowlin g is also the wealthiest woman in
the United Kingdom, well ahead of even Queen Elizab eth II.
Rowling wrote two novels for adults before she had the idea for Harry Potter
during a four-hour train trip. According to her, by the time she reached her
destination she had the characters and a good part of the plot for Harry Potter and
the Philosopher's Stone in her head. She started wr iting during her lunch hours, and
continued working on the manuscript throughout a st int in Oporto, Portugal
teaching English as a second language in the Encoun ter English School.
After a first unsuccessful marriage, she returned t o the United Kingdom with her
daughter and completed the book in Edinburgh, Scotl and. The sales made her a
multi-millionaire, and in 2001 she bought a luxurio us 19 th century mansion in
Perthshire, Scotland, where she married her second husband.

ROLE PLAY . Students will work in pairs. One will perform the role of a journalist or

WARM UP : The teacher shows his students some pictures of the main characters of English fairy
tales. He can add some details about each one. This is a good way to refresh my students the
vocabulary the learnt in the previous session.

example, students can see how something that happened in the past is normally told.

Students will spend some time in this session reading the adapted version of Robinson Crusoe. The
teacher will take advantage of this to encourage and teach his/her students to use the dictionary
properly. It can occur that not all students can read the number of pages indicated by the teacher
because not everybody has the same reading pace. So, it is important to be FLEXIBLE. But in those
cases, students will have to finish reading their novels at home and they will also have to do the
different activities the teacher will propose as homework. Fast finishers will be allowed to start the
homework at class.

The teacher explains his students that, as they can observe, the tendency in Spain is that with the passing of time we are incorporating more and more festivities coming from English-speaking countries (i.e. Halloween). So, the question for our students would be: Do you think this tendency is positive, or do you think that it can finish with some typical Spanish festivities such as The Three Wise Men?. Students will be encouraged to give as many ideas as possible and the teacher will write on the blackboard things in favour of or against this tendency. Session Nine
