Early Release

We understand that sometimes it is necessary to pull students out of school for doctors appointments, dentist appointments, etc. This year our fifth grade schedule dictates that math is taught at the end of the day. It is imperative that students are present for math instruction. We ask that when it is necessary to pull students out of school for appointments, you do so at the beginning of the day (prior to instruction beginning at 9:10). We appreciate you working with us to insure that your child receives a quality education.

SMART Time We are excited to let you know about a new

instructional format we are beginning August 26th called S.M.A.R.T. Time (Students Moving ARound Teachers).

S.M.A.R.T. Time is time allotted in the day to master core concepts and elevate learning to the next level.

S.M.A.R.T. Time will occur from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 daily. During this time students will review key concepts and/or engage in enrichment activities to further extend their knowledge.

Agendas Students are responsible for completing their agendas daily.

Assignments are posted on the blackboard.

We will check students’ agendas August – December and place our initials to indicate to parents the information was recorded properly. To help them transition to middle school expectations, beginning January of the second semester, students will be responsible for completing their agendas independently, without assistance from us.

• Parents need to check their child’s agenda for assignments and make sure the work has been completed.

• Incomplete assignment information will be attached to the weekly signed paper folder. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missing work and/or tests

Discipline

The fifth grade discipline policy is based on a check system.

1 check = warning

2 checks = 10 minutes off recess

3 checks = silent lunch

4 checks = write an action plan

5 checks = send to the office

Your child will receive a conduct grade at the end of every week in the signed papers folder. A grade of “S” will be given for no checks. A grade of “N” will be given for 1 or 2 checks for the week. A “U” will be given for 3 or more checks for the week.

Homework Policy Homework may include silent reading, long range assignments, skills

based activity work pages, and/or assignments from a textbook. Homework should take 30 – 60 minutes, on average, each night. An assignment ticket will be given to your child if an assignment is missing or incomplete. On the day of the incomplete assignment, your child will miss the first 10 minutes of recess.

Any assignment tickets received during the week will be stapled into your child’s weekly signed paper folder. A parent signature is required on the assignment ticket. Your child will receive an “S” for having no incomplete assignments. A grade of an “N” will be given for one or two missing assignments and a “U” will be given for three or more missing assignments.

Iowa Tests of Basic Skills

(ITBS) •Tests students on basic skills in reading comprehension,

capitalization, spelling, punctuation, word usage, math

computation, math reasoning, science, social studies, maps and

diagrams, and research.

•The test will be administered October 21-25.

•Test results used to identify areas of weakness as well as

determine middle school placement.

Criterion-Referenced

Competency Tests (CRCT)

•Tests students on Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) or

Common Core Standards in reading/language arts, math,

science, and social studies.

•The test will be administered April 16-23

•Fifth graders are required to pass the reading and math portions

of this test to go on to 6th grade.

Writing Assessment

o Consists of an evaluation of student’s response to an assigned prompt.

o Students are assigned a topic from any 3 different genres:

o Narrative

o Informational

o Persuasive

o Students are given approximately 120 minutes to write.
