(NAPSI)Road accidents
caused by distracted orspeeding drivers are ahuge risk for the morethan 135,000 men andwomen of the waste andrecycling industry whoare out in force eachday keeping our com-munities clean andhealthy-but you can bepart of the solution.
Just as mostdrivers tend to drivecarefully when they seea school bus, in manyplaces, it’s now requiredto give trash collectionvehicles the courtesy ofslowing down when try-ing to get around them.
The ProblemSome drivers try
to speed up to avoidgarbage trucks. Othersdon’t even realize one is
nearby, since they’resuch familiar presences.Because of such road-way dangers, trash col-lection is one of thecountry’s most danger-ous professions.
What’s BeingDone To help, the Na-tional Waste & Recy-cling Associa- tion’s(NW&RA’s) “Slow Downto Get Around” cam-paign urges drivers tobe more careful aroundsolid waste collectionvehicles.
“It’s critically im-portant for everyone’ssafety to slow down toget around garbagetrucks,” said Sharon H.Kneiss, president andCEO of NW&RA, which
represents thewaste and recyclingcompanies in theU.S. “It only takesone smart and cau-tious driver to setan example for therest of the cars onthe road.”
Many peopleare asking their commu-nity leaders about legis-lation and regulationsaimed at keeping trashcollectors and driverssafer on the roads. Sev-eral stateshave recentlypassed suchlaws.

Put the words“gooey” and “butter” infront of cake, and yousimply can’t go wrong. At least that what peoplein St. Louis think. St.Louis Gooey ButterCake is 70-year sourceof city pride and the for-tuitous outcome of abaking mishap.
“No one knowsexactly how this cakecame to be,” says DaleSchotte, owner of ParkCity Coffee, in St. Louis, which sells more than70 flavors of this cus-tard-like cake, “but I likethe version from the 90-year-old wife of thebaker who is supposedlyresponsible.”
Sometime in thelate 1930s or early1940s, the owner ofDanzer’s Bakery insouth St. Louis wasmaking his Deep ButterCake when he acciden-tally reversed theamount of sugar andflour. The outside of thecake was cooked butthe center was gooey.
Danzer setaside the failed cakeand finished his baking, but later that day he de-cided to taste his flop. Itwas so good, he spent asignificant amount oftime trying to recreatethe mistaken quantities. The cake was an imme-diate hit at his bakery.
How did it be-come a citywide sensa-tion? Danzer’s Bakeryshared the recipethrough the St. LouisBaking Association, anda regional specialty was
born.Schotte, who
opened Park AvenueCoffee five years ago, along with his sisterAnne, uses the recipetheir mom gave them. And, due to customerresponse, they’ve addedmore than 70 flavors tothe original recipe, which is still four timesmore popular than anyother. Cake lovers canorder a ready-to-eatcake or a cake mix bygoing to parkavenuecof-fee.com.

Paying it forwardcan pay off on your nexttax return, if you keeptrack of your donations.
“Giving to char-ity, even if you’re simplydonating clothes and fur-niture to a thrift store, can reduce your taxableincome,” explained JessiDolmage, of the populardigital tax preparationbrand TaxACT. “To maxi-mize your deduction, justfollow a few simple tips.”
• First, be sureyou’re giving to an eligi-ble organization recog-nized by the IRS. Searchfor the group using theIRS’ Exempt Organiza-tion Select Check atwww.irs.gov. Even if it’snot listed in the data-base, most religious or-ganizations andgovernment agenciesare eligible.
• Second, keepdetailed records for ac-curate valuation (and, inturn, your tax deduction)and in the unlikely eventof an audit. These shouldinclude organizationname, donation date andamount.
• For noncashdonations, document thecharity name, date andlocation of the donationand a reasonably de-tailed description of theitems. If you receive a re-ceipt from the charity, keep it with your records. The IRS requires addi-tional documentation forvehicle donations. Youmust receive a writtenacknowledgment or aForm 1098-C from thecharity for the vehicle.
• For monetarygifts, keep the written ac-knowledgment from theorganization with the do-nation date and amount.
A canceled check or cardstatement with the trans-action date will do forgifts under $250.
• If you get mer-chandise, benefits orprivileges in exchange
for the gift, you mustsubtract the value ofthose from the originalgift amount. If your pay-ment is more than $75,the organization mustgive you a written state-
ment with a descriptionand estimated value ofthe merchandise, goodsor services.
• Noncash dona-tions, such as clothing, kitchen gadgets and fur-
niture, must be in goodcondition or better. Thetax-deductible amount ofthose items is the fairmarket value (FMV), theprice if they were ex-changed between willing
buyers and sellers. Spe-cial rules apply to cars, boats, airplanes, prop-erty subject to debt, in-vestments that haveappreciated in value, andinventory from your busi-ness.
• Mobile appscan make donation track-ing easier. For example,TaxACT’s free DonationAssistant app trackscash, noncash and re-curring gifts, with FMVsfor more than 1,300 com-monly donated items. The app can save photosof donations and re-ceipts. Come tax time, the information can beimported into the Tax-ACT Deluxe program, which calculates themaximum deduction andcompletes related taxforms.
Charitable giftsmade between Jan.1 andDec. 31 can be deducted
if you itemize deductionson Form 1040 ScheduleA. To do so, all itemizeddeductions must exceedthe standard deductionamount based on youradjusted gross incomeand filing status.
Additionally, youmust file Form 8283 withyour tax return if yourcash and noncash contri-butions total more than$500. You will also needto file a qualified ap-praisal of donated prop-erty worth more than$5,000.
You can down-load the free app atwww.taxact.com/appsand learn more about thetax rules of charitablegiving at www.irs.govand www.taxact.com/tax-info.

Building Material Auction& Monthly Consignment
The odds of an8-year-old blind colliemix getting adopted did-n’t seem great. But thefolks at Hope Pet Res-cue, Barrington, Ill.,listed her on Petfinderand, as their name sug-gests, they always havehope. It wasn’t in vain.
Mary Siarkie-wicz and her husband,Jim, Mt. Prospect, Ill.,are not fazed by specialneeds pets. Thoughthey have Corky, aCorgi they took in whenMary’s aunt passedaway, and Fezzik, ablack Labrador Retrieverwho came to them whena relative could nolonger keep him, theirhome has included spe-
cial needs pets as well.Dobby the cat is one ofthem. Their late dog,Labrador Dali, had re-quired hip surgery atage 2, but had lived tothe age of 14. They alsohad a Collie mix namedCandy who went blind inher later years.
So when theysaw the blind Collie mixlisted on Petfinder, theyhad no qualms aboutadopting her becausetheir experience withCandy had been so re-warding.
To help Annie,as she is named, theyoutfitted their dogs andcats with bells so shewould not be surprisedby anyone sneaking up
on her.“I use the scent
of lavender on myjeans so she knowsmy smell,” Siarkiewiczsays.
“I also talk toher to let her know ifthere are stairs and tellher to stop before shewalks into anything.”
Fezzik the Re-triver also watches outfor Annie. “He gets outof her way so she hasa clear path,”Siarkiewicz says. “Ifthey are going for adrink of water at thesame time, Fezzik willlet Annie go first.”
Annie is luckythat the couple sawher listing on
Petfinder. She may havespecial needs, but they
are very special people.
