At 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27th
, students from PLMS 6th
grade returned from Snow Creek Ski Resort outside of Weston,
Missouri. Students returned tired with a few bumps and bruises, but thankfully without any major injuries.
This year students and parents left the school at approximately 8:30 a.m. when the
thermometers were still at 11 degrees with a light snow falling. We had not yet reached
Oskaloosa when the first shouts of, “Are we there yet?” sounded through the bus.
We arrived at 9:45, and for the first time in memory students did not have to wait
another 30 minutes on the buses. The teachers were pleased.
First, students were given preliminary
instructions on ski etiquette, how to put on ski
boots, and how to attach their lift tickets to
their clothing. They were also instructed
about how to use the lockers and how to leave
the building with skis in hand. Next came group lessons on how to put on skis, get up
after falling, and how to side step up the hill. Most importantly they learned how to snow
plow to a stop then use the rope tow. They practiced skiing down a small slope with
knees slightly bent, arms extended out in front of them, while leaning shins into the
upper part of their boots.
After completing beginning lessons students were
ready to attack the steeper slopes. As always,
students learn at their own pace. Some were flying down the hills in no time while others
struggled a little longer with more spills. Soon all were racing down the hills with their
classmates.
By mid-day the temperature rose to about 18 degrees with a slight wind out of the north.
Students came in from the cold, warmed their gloves and bodies, ate some lunch, and returned
for the afternoon of skiing. During lunch anyone who listened could hear stories of fantastic
spills and tumbles.
Students were called in at 3:30 p.m. Preparing to leave, students grabbed snacks for the bus ride back to school while relaying to
their friends the races they had down the slopes, attempts to avoid collisions, with many near misses and collisions. There were
stories of falls into the snow and everyone talked about how tired they were. The buses left Snow Creek at 4:00 p.m., with snow
still falling from the sky, headed toward home and a good night's rest.

Power School Abbreviations
The following is a key to the abbreviations that all Middle School teachers use in their grade books. Power School Grade Card Abbreviations
AB Absent (points exempt) EX Excused (points exempt) NC No Credit (zero points) M Missing (zero points)
The eligibility policy is as it was last year. Students who have an “F” grade in any class on Monday morning at the eligibility check will have the remainder of the week to raise their grade to passing. If the student does not raise the grade by the grade-check on the following Monday, the student is ineligible to play for the week. The cycle repeats until the student’s grade is raised to passing on the Monday grade-check. Students will be expected to raise their grades by completing and submitting homework and retaking tests. Students are guaranteed the opportunity to raise their grade to “passing” each week. They may practice but are expected to use their practice time to regain their eligibility. Official grade checks began Monday, September 8
