A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE

EFFECTS OF HERBAL MEDICATION AND SYNTHETIC MEDICATION IN TREATING

COUGH AND COLD OF GRADE 9 AND GRADE 10 STUDENTS OF

COLEGIO DE SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL S.Y. 2015-2016

CHAPTER I:The Problem and Its Background

Introduction….

It’s the season of rains and typhoons, and the season of cough and cold during every month of June to the end of December, and to protect you from these common rainy season afflictions or to help speed up healing, we have a lot of remedies synthetically and herbal that can be used for this seasonal diseases.

Introduction… Cough is a reflex action to clear

your airways of mucus and irritants such as dust or smoke. It's rarely a sign of anything serious. A “Dry cough" means it's tickly and doesn't produce any phlegm (thick mucus). A “Chesty cough" means phlegm is produced to help clear your airway.

Cold is a viral infection which is characterized by sneezing and runny nose.

Introduction….

The common cold and cough affects millions of people each year. There is no cure for the common cold, but colds can be prevented by carefully avoiding contact with cold sufferers and by remembering to frequently wash your hands. Symptoms of an influenza or "flu" virus infection may be similar to a cold but are usually more severe.

Background and the Study…

In the Philippines, Filipinos are very prone to the different disease during the rainy season. This study aims to illustrate a comparative description between the remedies that are being widely used and which is more safe and effective based on the perception of the respondents.

Hypothesis…

This study is expecting for the readers to establish this hypothesis:

“There is no difference or comparison on the effect of using herbal medicine to synthetic medicine when it comes in treating common cough and cold among high school students of Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel”

Statement of the Problem

The following are the problems that the study would like to answer:

1.What are the advantages and disadvantages of

the herbal medicines for common cough and colds?

2.What are the risks of remedies that are being used for cough and colds?

3.Who are those at risk of having cough and colds?4.When cough and colds a problem?5.Which preparation is better or favorable to use

by the students of Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel?

Scope and Limitation ….

The study will focus on the pros and cons of the herbal versus synthetic remedies for your cough and common colds. The study will only use descriptive type of study with the use of survey form of gathering data. The setting of survey is only limited to the students of Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel located at Fatima I, Area E, Sapang Palay, City of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, Philippines.

Scope and Limitation …

The respondents will be only consist of twenty-five (25) female and twenty-five (25) male students with one hundred students in total. The information will be gathered in the internet, textbooks, and other related literatures and from experts of this related study.

CHAPTER II:Review of Related Literature

Foreign Study …

According to a study in China. It sought to describe the epidemiology of viral respiratory tract infections and patterns in prescriptions of cough and cold medications among young children who were suffering from viral respiratory tract infections (vRTIs).

Foreign Study …

Another reason to eat more chocolate. It could keep you from coughing, according to doctors at the British National Health Service . In their study, about 300 people at 13 hospitals who had persistent coughs were given the chemical Theobromine, which is derived from cocoa, twice a day for 14 days. Early results showed that 60 percent of patients experienced some cough relief after taking the cocoa based treatment.

Local Study …

Foreign Literature …

Sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing and coughing--it's all part of the discomfort of having a cold. According to mayoclinic.com, most adults have between 2 and 4 colds a year. If you have a high fever, swollen glands, a cough with colored phlegm, or severe sinus pain, see your doctor .

Foreign Literature …

A cough that lasts between three weeks and eight weeks, improving by the end of the period, is known as a sub-acute cough. A persistent cough that lasts for over eight weeks is known as a chronic cough. Most coughs will clear up, or at least significantly improve, within two weeks. If you cough up blood or have a “barking” cough, consult with a doctor.

Local Study …

The performance of cough, cold, and allergy (hay fever) remedies in the Philippines remained fairly sluggish in 2014, with current value sales increasing by 3%. This growth can be attributed to the erratic weather conditions in the Philippines, which boosted the incidence of coughs and colds in both metropolitan and provincial areas.

Local Study …

Rapid changes in temperature brought about health problems such as coughs, colds, fever and flu, which sustained the demand for medication. By the end of 2014,total revenue for cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies in the Philippines reached PHP11.9 billion.
