A convenient midpoint between several major cities, the southern Alabama town of Greenville is full of hidden surprises. A city that honors its past in the many historic homes that sit astride the oak lined streets where people enjoy a casual stroll with friends and family, Greenville is a community that thrives off of friends, family and the deep faith expressed in the many historic churches the city hosts.

Ranked as the top small town in America in 2001 by a major website, Greenville enjoys the benefits of being located on a major interstate with easy travel times to major metropolitan cities such as Montgomery, Mobile, Birmingham and Atlanta, GA. Greenville also hosts its own modern airport large enough for private jet traffic, a benefit for existing and future industries who need such accommodations.

A walk through the neighborhoods of Greenville is a walk through history. Architectural styles from antebellum to Victorian can be found within the city limits, many of which have been historically preserved. Thanks to the Greenville Landmarks Foundation, there are several beautifully restored historical districts, happily and distinctively housing both residents and businesses. The city also has plentiful modern housing in the many newer subdivisions along with several apartment and town home complexes. Residents can enjoy the pleasures of living in cozy, small town neighborhoods, all the while knowing the amenities of big city life are a convenient drive away, via I-65.

Outdoor recreation is enjoyed at one of many parks throughout the city, notably Sherling Lake. The park is a perfect spot for fishing, camping, hiking and hunting. Plenty of deer, turkey, quail and fish wrapped in an inviting woodland setting help visitors reconnect with nature. Additionally, Greenville is famed for its world-renowned golf at Cambrian Ridge, part of the top-rated Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

Culture is always in bloom in and around the Camellia City. The immaculately renovated Ritz Theater, saved from demolition in the 1980s, is a 1930s Art Deco theater. The Greenville Area Arts Council, one of the most active and vibrant small-town arts organizations in the state, brings several top-quality performances to the stage of the historic Ritz every year. Nearby Georgiana offers the historically rich Ga-Ana Theater and a museum dedicated the life and career of country icon Hank Williams, Sr.

More than anything, the residents of Greenville and Butler County love to have fun as a community, a fact readily evident through the annual festivals held here. Among the favorites are the summertime Watermelon Jubilee, the Sweetgum Bottom Blues Festival, the Butler County Fair, Celebrate America, Old Time Farm Day, the Sweet Potato Festival, the Christmas Parade and Georgiana’s Hank Williams Festival.

Patrons enjoy shopping in the area, as Greenville contains a mixture of both cozy independent shops and large national retailers. The city’s downtown shopping district is a thriving one. Residents and visitors of the Camellia City will find businesses, boutiques, an art gallery and gift shops galore. Greenville, the commercial heart of Butler County, is a place where service still comes with a genuine “thank you” and a warm southern smile.

Greenville is also the industrial center of Butler County, with a great mix of entrepreneurs, manufacturing plants and several Fortune 500 companies. A more recent industry to find a home in the area is the automobile industry, which was spurred with the opening of Hyundai’s Montgomery manufacturing plant and suppliers, including Greenville-based Hwashin and Hysco.

There are many reasons people choose Greenville, Alabama, the Camellia City, to live, work or visit. The employment opportunities are growing, the real estate market diverse and the hometown feeling unmatched. Enjoy the Camellia City’s many community festivals, historical landmarks, boutiques and shops, and it will soon become clear why the residents of Greenville are proud to called the best small town in America.
