A GLIMPSE INTO ENGLISH
Nicky’s CM2 Legends
CM1: Emilie’s “S” project on San Fransisco
As part of the CM2 study of myths and legends Nicky’s students wrote sto-ries about an enchanted book. Here are some story excerpts:
Joseph De Sousa
The reason
that Mom and Dad did not
read the book was that
they were too scared. I
reminded myself that they
had told me the book was
cursed. I didn’t believe it.
So, this
night I decided to read
the book for answers.
Suddenly, my
torch turned off. 30 min-
utes had already passed,
and the doors closed
swiftly. I called for Mom
and something replied in
her place. The voice called
my name while it echoed
through my room. I fell to
my knees; spiky vines came
out of my eyes. I was com-
pletely blind.

CM1 with Miss Charisse
During our unit on Ad-venture stories Year 4 have been working on a novel study of C.S Lewis’ classic story of ‘Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. They have identified elements and language structures of fantasy narratives and have learnt to enrich their writing by adding description. The chil-dren have also focused their efforts on writing effective chapter summa-ries.
As Lucy walks on, she still
cannot find the back of the
wardrobe. She finds a lamp
post among some trees.
Startled, Lucy meets a faun
named Mr Tumnus. Lucy
follows him home to his
cave. But, does she know his
intentions? Tumnus has tea
with Lucy and tells her sto-
ries of Narnia. He then
tries to lull her to sleep in
order to hand her over to
the White Witch.

CM2 Writing Challenge
Page 2 A Glimpse Into English
Once again the Sydney Youth Writing Competition has come to a close and a few fantastic poems were entered in CM2. The task was to use the words wind, keep or light.
Well done to the entrants, and good luck!
Gum Tree
I glance over the canteen, I
stare over the school and
there I gaze a fabulous
statue with its majestic branches.
I touch the sweet, shiny
bark. I can almost taste the euca-
lyptus. Its leaves rustle with the soft
wind. The pure nature of that fabu-
lous giant.

CE2s have been studying natural disasters. They’ve taken their new knowledge and applied it to the beauti-ful and simple style of Japa-nese poetry: the haiku.

Lava and black rocks.
Dangerous magma destroys.

Drought
Yellow spikes, bare trees
Blue disappears on the earth

Autumn The wind is blowing in my face, Through the woods and in the city, The colourful trees dance with grace. It’s not summer what a pity, The days are shorter, The waves are rising, I’m not in the water. Now I’m painting, At my own pace, The hills, A red, orange and yellow place. By Zazou Mackenzie
CE2 Haikus The black lake
it’s a lake
hidden in gloom
it shimmers
under the pale moon.
it’s unknown.
it’s peril
to any living creature
who dares to stampede
on it’s territory.
only the bright sunlight
can waken it
from the mysterious curse
that so consumes it,
only the bright sunlight,
that it never gets.
It laps up
on the damp sand
beside it
like dead sea creatures
finally reaching the shore.
The disturbing atmosphere
that hovers over it
is most easily seen
by the bare human eye
Only the most unearthly
creatures
live in it’s murky depths.
the wind creates monsterly ripples
in the mud inundated water.

CE1 Fractured Fairytales
Witches in GS
CE1s in Prue’s class have been writing their own twists on classic fairytales. Here is one excerpt:
The Three Wombats and the Big, Bad Kangaroo
by Lucille Giraud
One day the three little wom-bats’ mum was eaten by a dingo. The dad didn’t have enough money to look after all of the children so he said, “You must all go and build your own houses, but beware of the big, bad kangaroo.
So they all went off to build their own houses.
The first little wombat, who was called Steven, didn’t dig his hole deep enough so the big kangaroo came along.
“Little wombat, little wombat
let me come in.”
“Not by the fur on my thick, thick skin.”
“Then I’ll stamp and stamp and I’ll jump right in.”
The big, bad kangaroo stamped and stamped and jumped right in. He grabbed the wombat with his big, bad claws to give to his friend, the dingo.
Buttcheek
Once upon a time there was a troll called Buttcheek. He lived in a country called Canada. He was very good. He did karate. One day he did some karate on
people. And then he got a friend. The End.

In HSIE and English, Year 2 has been busy learning about different types of pets and animals. They have learnt how to distinguish the difference between wild ani-mals and domestic pets as well as identifying Australian native animals.
Year 2 worked hard on gath-ering facts about Lions and Tigers and discussed the differences and similarities between them.
The children then chose their favourite Australian native animal to research and have written some in-sightful information reports.
As part of our unit study on Pirates, Adriane’s CPs have been learning how to describe objects through their writing. Here are some of the par-rots that you could find on a captain’s shoulder.
Cornchef the Troll

the quality of the presenter and of the drama experience.
Here are some photos of the won-derful event.
Hopefully next year we can repeat this unforgettable experience!
At the beginning of the school year, 91 students participated in the first annual Read-a-thon read-ing 165,899 minutes and raising $6,184.00. Half of the proceeds raised went to the Indigenous Lit-eracy Foundation which provides literacy support for Indigenous communities. The other half went to the English department. With this money, we decided to cele-brate the students’ efforts and had a special event. We organized a drama incursions for CP to CM2
with Drama Toolbox. A wonder-ful presenter named Melinda came to the school over a period of three days and held workshops with all the students.
CP experienced the wild world of minibeasts. CE retold the Abo-riginal tale of Tiddalick the Frog, and CM acted out different sustainability di-lemmas that we face today.
The students truly enjoyed themselves and the teach-ers were blown away with

CM Picture books
The CM2 in Adriane’s class have taken their creative writing stories to the next level: writing and illus-trating a picture book. After read-ing and discussing popular chil-dren’s picture books the students created their own storylines and set off. The result is truly fantastic and the CPs were entranced as the CMs read to them.
