Getting Started With Grants.gov

Why do we have to use Grants.gov?

• In 1998 Grants.gov was one of the 24 President’s Management Agenda -- E-Government Initiatives (see Public Law 106-107)

• Intended to provide a simple, unified electronic storefront for interactions between grant applicants and the Federal agencies that manage grant funds

• Website located at http://grants.gov/

PureEdge Viewer

• In order to download and apply for grants through Grants.gov, you must first install PureEdge Viewer on your computer

• PureEdge Viewer software is free and available on the Grants.gov website at: http://www.grants.gov/DownloadViewer#new

Search for grants by entering keywords, a funding opportunity

number, or a CDFA

Search results will appear. Click “Grant” to learn more about a grant opportunity.

Once you have read the grant opportunity you can click “Apply for Grant Electronically”

to download the grant application.

If the grant is available for electronic submission, a

“download” hyperlink will appear. Click the “download” link.

Step 1: Click “Download Application Instructions”

Step 2: Click “Download Application Package”

Open up the file or save it to your hard drive.

Completing and Submitting Grant Applications

Complete each mandatory documentby highlighting the document and

clicking “Open Form”

Fields highlighted in yellow are mandatory

Clicking on the “Close Form” button will only temporarily save your work

CAUTION: To save your work – Click on the “Save” button located on the Cover Page before exiting

To submit your completed forms, highlight the form title and click on the arrow to the right under the “move form to submission list.” This will move the form to the “Mandatory Completed Documents for Submission” window.

Completed forms will appear in the window on the right

Check your package for errors before submitting

Submitting

• After checking for errors, save the file to your hard drive or storage device

• In order to submit the proposal, email the saved file to your Senior Grants Specialist

• Your Senior Grants Specialist will submit the proposal on behalf of the University

• Proposal must be submitted a minimum of business 2 days before the due date

Possible Barriers

• PureEdge Viewer for MAC Users and Non-Windows Users– Citrix Server available for non-Windows users to

complete the applications—Free– Virtual PC Version 7 $129 to VPC with “Windows XP

Professional” $249--per user

• File Types – Depending on the form it may require the document to be converted to PDF

• Transferring large files from PI to SGS via email

Known Barriers

• 48 hours prior to deadline date needed to ensure submission

– Validation of the Authorized Organizational Representative can take up to 24 hours

– Validation by the Agency to accept the application can take up to 24 hours
