A New Scanning Electron Microscope

• Lakeview has just received a $77,000 grant to purchase a new Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM for short).

• SEM’s are used professionally to see objects on the scales that are used in nanotechnology

• An SEM scans a beam of electrons across a sample to produce an image.

• Objects can be magnified from 10x - 300,000x.

• We will be able to see objects as small as three nanometers across

A New Scanning Electron Microscope

• Each box zooms in and is 10 time smaller than the next.

• The circled box is 2 nm across. The different colored balls represent individual atoms

Just how small is a “nanometer”?

SEM images – Spider

SEM images – Pollen granules magnified 550x

SEM images – E. coli bacteria magnified 12,000x

SEM images – Bacteriophage ~100,000xA virus that infects E. coli.

Nanotechnology

• Acquisition of this microscope is a significant milestone for Lakeview

• It will allow students to see materials on the scale used for Nanotechnology for the first time.

• In addition, uses for the instrument have already been planned for courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Technology
