A primer for administrators……

Benefits of IMPs Ways to facilitate IMPs

in your school Potential “hurdles”

There can be little doubt that the appropriate use of technology in the classroom increases learning. In fact, some studies have found computer-augmented instruction to be superior to regular instruction alone in enhancing student learning Cepni, Tas, & Kose, 2006; Kiboss & Ogunniyi, 2005).

Interactive Multimedia Projects (IMPs) can be particularly useful. Studies have shown that students engaged in multimedia project-based learning are more likely to use higher-level thinking skills and complete complex long-term projects.

Studies have also shown that students perceive these sorts of activities as indicative that their teachers care about their success. MacIver, Young, & Washburn, 2002)

Students make the connection that what they are learning about is relevant to their worlds when completing “authentic” projects.(Kottler, Zehm, & Kottler, 2005.

Educational goals must be closely aligned with the use of technology.

Technology in the classroom should not use a “one-size-fits-all “ approach. The individual needs of students should be taken into account.

Problem-solving and communication skills should be taught in addition to the implementation of technology.

It should be emphasized that for IMPs to be successful they must be implemented appropriately.

Administrators can utilize research-based, empirical evidence to base their decisions on technology in schools. CARET, or the Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology serves as a clearinghouse for such information. See http://caret.iste.org/
