Eagle Project
Boy Scout Kurt Brase, former St . B o n i f a c e School student, approached Sr. Anna to see if she had an idea of something he could do for h i s E a g l e Project. She s u g g e s t e d some steps to replace the sinking stones she and Sr. Kathleen Ann use to cross over to the school.
Kurt is part of Boy Scout Troup 1072 of St. Mary’s, Edwardsville. There are a few finishing touches yet to be made, but the stairs are providing a safer means of travel for the Sisters.
Faculty and staff filled the FMCHS House Chapel for Mass as they kicked off the new school year welcoming new faculty, new student transfers and a brand new crop of freshman! Every seat (183) was taken as the Eucharist was celebrated and Bibles were blessed for new Griffin students.
The weekly 10:00 a.m. Mass on Thursdays is open to all FMCHS supporters.

STB2019 Planning Commission Update
The committee continues to meet monthly to focus on the 4 key priorities introduced in April’s update.
Facilities – This group has identified deterioration to three areas of the church that requires immediate attention. Bids/proposals have been presented to the committee and a recommendation to repair the plaza walls prior to the first frost was made. HVAC issues in the church are now the top priority and bids are being reviewed.
Communications –The new parish website is on schedule to be unveiled in mid Sept. An ad featuring the parish and PreK-12 parish schools has been created and will run in the 2016 Community Guide that will be available at local business and realtors.
Long Range Financials – Preliminary recommendations and a five-year plan have been presented and will be refined as bids for the HVAC and brick deterioration are reviewed.
150th Celebration & History – The group continues to explore ideas for the year of celebration and presented a timeline of the history of the church.
Congratulations Newly Baptized

Dear Parishioners,
There is NO School on Monday, September 5, in honor of Labor Day. St. Boniface School began its annual fall fundraiser, Mags & Bags. Parishioners are invited to purchase new subscriptions, renew current ones, or purchase gifts online from
www.GASchoolStore.com and enter St. Boniface School code: 2520526. In addition, the school is selling trash bags for $10/roll. Bags in three sizes: 15 gallons for your usual kitchen container, 39 gallons and 55 gallons. Bags are high quality and very durable for a multitude of uses. Contact any St. Boniface School student or the school office to make a purchase. For years, St. Boniface School (and many other schools) have collected Campbell Soup Labels. In the past few years, participation in Labels for Education has declined and as a result, Campbell has come to the decision to wind down the program—this will be the last year.
As of August 1, 2016 only barcodes with the Labels for
Education logo will be accepted and redeemed for points. Our banked points that have accumulated will not be affected and will be used to purchase playground equipment for our school.
For the current school year, Campbell’s has continued with the Grand Stand for Schools Sweepstakes. Individuals enter their school to have a chance to be one of 100 schools randomly selected to receive a $10,000 award to help with the school’s needs. Enter at GrandStandForSchools.com for free and upload a receipt of an eligible purchase for 5 bonus entries. Plus, you have a chance to win a $175 Visa® Prepaid Card for your next grocery trip. For more information, visit GrandStandForSchools.com.
We also collect aluminum cans, Box Tops for Education, Tyson coupons, ink cartridges and cell phones. You may continue to recycle your newspaper in our recycling bin; however, we no longer receive any payment for our paper. It is just our contribution to the environment. Unfortunately, we have not found anywhere that we can recycle the SCRIP cards.

MINISTRY MINUTES
Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein
In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable that describes who is invited to the Kingdom of God. As children we read or heard stories that included kingdoms. Think of fairy tales, fables, or myths that have a king, queen, prince, princess or a castle in them such as Snow White, Cinderella and the Frog Prince; or maybe you were a fan of the movie Princess Bride. Because of this, when we hear the word kingdom, those images are often the first to pop into our minds. In scripture when we read or hear the word kingdom or the phrase “Kingdom of God” we know it is not simply a place but a way of living according to the teachings of Jesus. According to this parable, who is invited to the Kingdom of God? Richard Rohr, OFM, suggests that in order to understand what the Kingdom of God is we need to step back and reconsider how we think about the people, places and situations in our lives, “As long as you do not reframe your reality, as long as you insist on your own frame of reference, you will not be able to find the wisdom in paradox. ‘The kingdom of God’ is Jesus’ term for the bigger frame, or what we often call ‘the big picture’ or ‘in the light of eternity’ (sub specie aeternitate). You’ve got to find some framework that allows you to stand back and look at the moment with the eyes of Infinite Love and Mercy.”
Like Jesus, we are to love others not because of who they are, but because of who we are. How are we mere mortals to do this? Unlike in the fairy tales we don’t have a magic wand to suddenly change our minds and ways of thinking. It takes study, time and prayer. In the Lord’s Prayer, we pray “thy kingdom come, thy will be done.” This is a good place to begin.
Passing Through a Holy Door During this Year of Mercy
Our Year of Mercy started on December 8, 2015 on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the 50th Anniversary of Vatican II. It will end on November 20, 2016 on the Feast of Christ the King. All Holy Doors will be closed on November 13, one week before the end of the Holy Year.
A pilgrimage to pass through a Holy Door can be a grace-filled and prayerful way to experience and celebrate this Year of Mercy. Our Cathedral has a designated Holy Door and the main door of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows at the Shrine in Belleville is also designated as a Holy Door.
Holy Doors have been in use since the Fifteenth Century as a ritual expression of conversion. Pilgrims pass through it as a gesture of leaving the past behind and crossing the threshold from sin to grace. But the door finds meaning only when the believer associates the door with Christ. Jesus is the Door. In the words of Pope Francis, “There is only one way that opens wide the entrance into the life of communion with God: this is Jesus, the one and absolute way to salvation. To Him alone can the words of the Psalmist be applied in full truth: ‘This is the door of the Lord where the just may enter’ (Ps 118:20).”
Our parish is observing this Holy Year by praying together the Beatitudes at the end of Mass and with a series on the works of mercy that is being written by members of our Pastoral Council and distributed by e-mail. You can add to those practices your own observances. Travelling to a Holy Door and passing through it in prayer can be a moving individual or family experience. In this the Year of Mercy our Holy Doors are places where the mercy of God is open wide.

Stewardship
The First Reading in today’s Holy Scripture is from the Old Testament Book of Sirach. At times this Bible book has also been called the Wisdom of Sirach. Similar to Proverbs, Sirach is a series of teachings recorded between 200 and 175 BC.
The first verse of this reading captures one of the key elements of stewardship. It says, “My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.” The word “humility” literally means “of the earth” or in a phrase which might mean more to us “down to earth.” The good steward realizes that he or she receives everything from a loving and generous God. That can be a humbling recognition.
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less,” is how the eminent author and theologian C.S. Lewis put it. We are important in the eyes of God. Jesus emptied Himself on our behalf. He was humility incarnate. Washing the feet of His Apostles, He comes to us at every Mass in common bread and wine.
If we practice and pursue stewardship as a way of life, we choose to let others be more important; we are not controlling; we support others in silent ways. Are you willing to let God take charge of your life? Being a steward means that. That is the message from Sirach, and it is a message given us by Jesus over and over.

• Easy and convenient! EFT is an automatic withdrawal from your checking account on a monthly basis. There are no service fee charges! All we need is a copy of your cancelled check and your authorization form for an amount to be given automatically. Once a month giving is as easy as paying your light bill!
• Traditional weekly contribution envelopes provided by the church. This allows us to give you credit for the gifts you give to the church. We have no way to credit anonymous gifts of cash.
• Are you visiting or have not yet registered? We will send you a thank you letter for your contribution (if you give by check) that can be used for tax purposes. Cash donations are more difficult unless a name and address are included with the gift.
All gifts to St. Boniface are tax deductible!

Author/Parishioner Dallas Browne, Ph.D.
Parishioner and author Dallas Browne, Ph.D. has spent the last two years researching and writing about two remarkable African American anthropologists named William Alfred Shack and James Lowell Gibbs. Both men showed courage, determination, talent and tenacity in their efforts to rise in American academic society at a time when many established academics did not want them in their institutions. Their life stories demonstrate how individuals can rise despite obstacles and resistance. Their stories can inspire people facing difficulties in their own efforts to rise in America to hold on and keep trying because they can see that in America such things can happen if we work hard enough. Dallas is trying to crowd fund the publication of their inspiring stories. The funding link is gofundme.com/2fqvaes.
