TRANSCRIPT
This my last letter as
president for the 2016-
2017 BQU year, and I
want to tell you how
much I’ve enjoyed it.
Working with all of you,
especially our volunteers,
has been a wonderful
experience - so many
generous people ready to
share their time and tal-
ents with all of us. Many
of our chairs have agreed
to continue on next
year. A big "thank you!”
goes out to all of you. If
you didn’t volunteer this
year, please consider do-
ing so next year. We are
a volunteer organization,
and you are the volun-
teers! We still have open-
ings for the following
chairs: Auction, Educa-
tion/Donations, Quilt Col-
lector, Quilt Show Rep,
Spring Retreat (2018)
and Sunshine. Let me
know which one you
want!
My board made my job
so much easier. Linda
Cooper made sure we
had a meeting place for
every meeting (a harder-
than-it-sounds job), ran
our in house programs
(Quilto and Back to
School Night), was in
charge of our door prizes,
and was generally my
“wingman”. Marianne
Hooker worked overtime
to bring terrific pro-
grams and workshops to
us (though attendance at
the workshops was
sparse. We are consider-
ing abandoning them
since they have not been
paying for them-
selves. Please send
Marianne or me your
thoughts on that. Per-
haps having BQU subsi-
dize them is something
you’d like to consider.)
Kathy McCrea took on
the job of treasurer val-
iantly, working through
all of the problems we
threw her way such as
checks made out to the
wrong person, incom-
plete request forms, and
lost receipts. Our secretary,
Karen Brewster, took meticu-
lous notes at very business
meeting and gave us detailed
minutes for all of them - es-
pecially appreciated by those
who couldn’t attend the meet-
ing. Sharon Thompson took
on the job of nominations
chair, and rounded up an ex-
cellent slate of officers for
next year. (We still need a
new Nominations chair. Hint-
hint.) I am so grateful to all of
them for volunteering and for
working with me during the
2016-2017 year.
The amount of charity quilts
(and preemie hats) submitted
this year far exceeded any-
one’s expectation! We ran
out of both fabrics and bat-
ting! Thank you all for being
so generous. I hear that the
gauntlet has been thrown
down to produce even more
next year!

Fall Retreat
Nov. 9-12, 2017
Save the date! Mark it on your
calendar! Ask for vacation days!
Tell your family to make other
plans! We are going quilting!
Have you ever been to a quilt re-
treat? If not, let me tell you what
you can expect. Get ready to have
fun! It's an opportunity to quilt
uninterrupted for a whole week-
end. You can do as much or as lit-
tle as you choose. Make new
friends. No cooking or cleaning,
just fun and friendship, a girl’s
weekend, a big slumber party,
you get the idea!
Watch for retreat information and
registration details in an August
eblast. Contact Linda Snow
(ljsnow2@gmail.com) if you have
any questions.
Thank You!!
It has been a pleasure to serve
as Administrative VP for the guild
this year and to work with such
good leaders.
I look forward to seeing many of
you at the June Social at Burke
UMC on June 14th. Thanks for
the wonderful blocks you've given
me for the President's quilt. It
will be a pleasure to give it to
Barb at the party.

Baby Quilts
June is upon us and this is my last newsletter article for the year. For Charity Quilts it has been an astounding year. I counted the members of our chapter from our roster and found we have 127 members. The total number of quilts donated (as of 5/26) is 343! That is over 2 ½ quilts per member. Your willingness to give is overwhelming. Every-one is has been very generous with their time but there are a few members who have gone over and beyond with their generosity. First a thank you to Becky Myers. Becky volun-teered to create a Tshirt quilt (see photo) for the highest bidder at the FACETS Fall Auction. The money raised by FACETS is used to help those in need in Fairfax County to pay for gas, electric, rent bills etc. in an emergency. Thank you Becky for this labor of love! We have had some prolific quilters in our mist. Thanks to Vicki Deere who never came to a meeting without half a dozen quilts under her arm to donate. Mary Reddington donated quilts made by her students in Delaware! We even received quilts from Bill Rice (20 in total) who is a member of the Vienna Chapter! And thank you to Jana Franklin for using her talents on the long arm to quilt so many of the tops donated. She never turned me down when I asked her to finish a quilt. And let us not forget our knitters. I have given Children’s National Medical Center over 700 hats this year. Bonnie Ruetenik, Jim Watson, and Linda Cooper have been inex-haustible in producing the sweetest little hats to cover the fragile little heads of the preemies. Thank you to everyone who has given me a quilt, donated fabric, long armed a donated top, sewed binding, attended the Charity Sew-In, or helped me schlepp everything to my car. Your time, generosity, creativeness, and friendship have made being the chair of this committee a true pleasure. Now I just have to figure out what our quilt goal will be for next year!!!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR QU QUILT SHOW
Page 9
Volume XXIII , I ssue 10, June 2017
President Barb Sherwood called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm and welcomed everyone.
Minutes: Minutes from the March 8, 2017 meeting were printed in the February newsletter. A motion
was made by Jean Taylor and seconded by Renee Castrop that the minutes be approved as
published in the newsletter. The motion carried by voice vote.
Old Business: While we now have a slate of officers and it has been sent out in an e-blast, there was has
not been sufficient notice per the by-laws for us to vote at this meeting. Therefore the elec-tion of officers is postponed to our June meeting.
By-Laws:
The By-laws were reviewed by Barb Sherwood. The amendments needed to have our by-laws in sync with Big QU were published in an e-blast.
1. Membership Changes:
See Article III. Membership Article III.6.b is being eliminated, as Senior Status has been eliminated by QU. We must
conform to the QU’s bylaws. It will be replaced with: “The annual dues for a Regular mem-
ber is $30 as of July 1, 2017"
Article III.6.c is being replaced with: "Life members (a limited category) are those who were at least 75 years of age and were
Life members for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. No new Life memberships will be granted. Anyone 75 or older who was not a Life member as of June 30, 2017 will be classi-
fied as a Regular member from July 1, 2017”
Article 6.III.d is being changed to: “A Family membership shall be defined as 2 or more family members living at the same ad-
dress. The first member must pay the Regular membership fee. Each additional household member shall pay the Family membership fee of $10. Again, this is to conform to QU by-
laws.
Article III.6.e shall read:
“Associate members are those individuals who are active members of another Chapter, and who have paid annual dues to that chapter. Associate Members joining at any time during
the year shall pay membership dues of $10 to the second and subsequent chapters. This entire amount shall be retained by the chapter.”
Burke QU Business Meeting Minutes, May 10, 2017
Sangster Elementary School
Page 10
Volume XXIII , I ssue 10, June 2017
Article III.7. The second sentence shall read: “New members joining after 1 Octobershall be listed in the Chapter newsletter, if they so wish.” This is being amended due to the lack of secu-
rity on the new QU website, where newsletters will be posted; some people may not want their personal information published there. We have not been posting new members in the newsletter,
but should be doing so if the member so wishes.
2. Officers’ Term Limits
see Article V - Election of Officers ArticleV.6: The first sentence shall read: "An officer shall serve no more than 2 consecutive
terms.” This is to include the office of President, who currently may serve no longer than 1 year.
3. Authorization of non-budget expenditures see Article VI - Executive Board
Article VI.3.c shall read, “…authorize all non-budget expenditures over $125." The original $25 has been effect since the start of BQU 45 years ago. It is an inconsequential amount to-day. $125 was chosen because it is the price of a roll of batting, including shipping. Batting
needs cannot be precisely known at the time the budget is made, and an additional roll during the year is an example of the type of non-budgeted expenses that the board should be able to au-
thorize.
4. Additional duty of Vice President/Admin see Article VII - Duties of Officers
Article VII.2.e shall be changed to: "Be responsible for all in-house programs, to include but not limited to Quilto and Back to School Night.” This is currently a duty of the VP/Admin that was simply not listed under her responsibilities.
The current Article VII.2.e shall be reordered to Article VII.2.f
**End of changes**
It was moved by Denise Racz, seconded by Sandy Kretzer and approved by voice vote that the amendments to the by-laws be approved as submitted.
Auction: A discussion followed concerning whether the Auction should move back to November as in previ-
ous years or stay in April as it occurred this year. It was determined that the timing of the auc-tion would be determined by when and who volunteers as Auction Chair.
Donations:
Barb Hall presented the recommendations for charitable donations. $200 to the Virginia Quilt Mu-seum, $150 to Fairfax Co. Public Library and $150 to Kid Comfort for a total of $500. A motion
was made by Barb Hall and seconded by Jean Taylor to approve the donation budget as submit-ted. There was discussion if Kid Comfort was still in operation. Kathy McCrea, treasurer pointed out that the budget for donations was $1,200 not $500. It was also noted that checks need to be
cut prior to fiscal year end. There was discussion about possible additional donations. Debbie

Dempsey discussed a need for funds to maintain the sewing machines at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Budget are being trimmed and she has been informed by her principal
that sewing machine maintenance is being cut. Questions arose as to why students couldn’t be charged a fee (unallowable under current regulations) and why Lake Braddock and not
also West Springfield and South Run. Lake Braddock is the HS in the Burke area. The
question was called and a vote on the motion was taken. By voice vote the motion failed. A decision on donations will be delayed until the July meeting when we have more informa-
tion concerning the Lake Braddock HS situation.
Big QU news: The February 2018 program will use local talent. Big Qu is offering a stipend to presenters.
They are compiling a list of possible presenters. If you are interested or know of someone locally please contact Barb Sherwood or Marianne Hooker.
Quilt Show:
Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts will get in free on Sunday if in uniform (sashes only are okay). Vol-unteers are still needed only 28% of jobs are filled. Quilt collection starts at the May 24th
meeting at 6:00 pm. There is no insurance for quilts until May 16th. If you can’t bring yours in for the May 24th meeting please call or email Renee to arrange a time to drop them
off at her home.
Reminder there is no water or snacks provided at the Annual Meeting this year. Meeting will be from 5:30 to 6:00 pm with the speaker, Augusta Cole, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.
Announcements:
Charity Quilts: At Spring Retreat there were enough blocks made to have 2 double sized quilts which will
be donated to Facets. To date we have done 289 preemie quilts and 440 hats.
Program: Maryanne Hooker announced our speaker at the May 24th meeting will be Dianne Henry.
She will lecture on threads and needles. She has recently been certified as a Threadologist by Superior Threads.
Treasurer Report:
Kathy McCrea announced we have $19,000 in the bank. Still have Spring Retreat bills and
donations are outstanding. Not all Membership money dollars are in.
New Business: Barb Sherwood announced the slate of officers as published in the recent e-blast.

I must admit that my favorite part of our meetings is show-and-tell. I love seeing what
everyone else has done and being inspired by all of your works. From beginner to pro, we
all have something to contribute there. Thank you all for sharing with us.
The quilt show has not begun as I write this, but I know we’re all looking forward to it. It
is always a marvelous experience with both the wonderful quilts that delight and inspire
us, and those fabulous vendors who entice us and help clear out our wallets, if not our
studios.
I hope to see you at the two summer program meetings that Marianne has arranged for
us, unless you’re off on a summer adventure!
Keep on creating, and have a wonderful summer. I’ll see you in September!
