ABC BOOK In addition to reading the novel on your own and discussing it with your group, you will also be expected to help complete the following project:

As  you  read,  look  for  literary  elements  such  as  characters, setting, conflicts, figures of speech, themes, issues, plot, foreshadowing, etc. and  organize  these  elements  using  the  letters  of  the  alphabet.  You  will  eventually  be  expected  to  create  an  ABC  book  where  you  give  an  example  of  any  of  these  elements  using  each  letter  of  the  alphabet.  You  will  eventually  be  asked  to  present  at  least  part  of  your  book  in  front  of  the  class.

• As  you  read,  gather  details  from  the  book  to  create  the  individual  pages  for  each  letter  of  the  alphabet.  Be  sure  to  record  page  numbers  because  you  will  need  exact  quotations.

Make  sure  that  you  include:

1. Front  cover—including  the  author,  but  a  new  title,  image,  and  tagline.  2. Title  Page  –  include  full  book  title,  the  name  of  the  author,  publishing,  and  

copyright  information.  3. Almost  each  letter  should  have  its  own  page  with:      

a. literary  element  or  meaningful  item  (character,  setting,  object)  from  the  novel  identified,  

b. 3-­‐4  quotes  from  the  text  that  exemplify  the  literary  element  or  item  with  proper  citation  (do  not  need  to  be  dialogue,  but  does  need  to  be  word-­‐for-­‐word  instead  of  paraphrased)  

c. a  dominant  illustration  or  image,  or  several  (at  least  3)  smaller  ones  that  relate  to  the  literary  element  or  item,  

d. several  sentences  which  explain  the  literary  element  or  item  and  explain  its  meaning  or  meaningfulness  in  the  novel.    *Some  letter  can  be  skipped  (“X”),  while  others  may  need  multiple  entries  due  to  the  number  of  people  in  a  group.  

4. Back  cover  that  includes:   a  paragraph  summary  of  the  story  that  does  not  give  away  the  ending,  and praise  (pretend  you’re  a  critic  –  look  at  the  back  of  other  books  for  a  model)    

Follow  these  guidelines,  but  be  creative.    Each  group  member  is  responsible  for  6  

“pages”  (“Front  Cover”  is  a  page).

This 60 point assignment is due on Wednesday, May 28.
