The challenge

• 9,500 People die (prematurely) annually

from Air Pollution in London

• Air Pollution causes:

Asthma

Dementia

Heart Disease

Lung Disease

Children especially susceptible

• And yet still nearly a third of children

in London travel to school by car,

over 40% in the UK ……

• We have: worked with 270 pupils in 4 schools in

Wandsworth

• This is: Part of wider project working with more than

840 pupils in 14 schools across 4 boroughs

• We reached: more people and reinforced the

messages by extending the project over 2 years

Schools- overall results

Results:

• Snapshot readings in some places could indicate an

exceedance of the annual mean NO2

• A large number of pupils of pupils want to cycle BUT

only few do (41% to 1%)

• Many parents knew very little about AQ (60%)

- A Case Study

Clean Air 4 St Mary’s

Overview

• Working with year 5 pupils over 2 years

• 30 students took participated in our

campaign last year and a further 60

students earlier this year, carrying out

citizen science activities

• Through assemblies, posters and end of

year fete, we were able to raise awareness

of air quality to the local community and

parents.

Spread the word

• Public meetings with many local people

• Took the issue to other civic societies

• Contributed by presenting findings at two pan

London events and at least 8 local events

• Created a London and nationwide publicity campaign

Liaised with politicians

• Meeting with the local authority. Local authority

agreed to monitor the area with a permanent station.

Responded to consultations

• Responded to planning applications ensuring that

pollution was properly considered

Taking action

• Worked with the council and TfL to have the cleanest

bus fleet

• Worked with the council to and local businesses to

rationalise local deliveries

• Started a campaign discouraging idling at on the
