same-entityandcross-entitydesignators,buildingon6JSC/AggregatesWG/1.

Therearenohigh-levelrelationshipsbetweenWEMIentitiesandPFCentities(e.g.,WhasrelatedP).Theserelationshipsareprovidedusingmorespecificrelationshipdesignators.

ThisisaresultofdifferentialtreatmentoftheRDAentities.PFCentitiesaretreatedas

secondaryentitiesonlyrequiredforaccesspointstoWEMIdata,reflectinglegacypractices

basedonAACR2andaninterpretationoftheoriginalFRBRmodel.TheLRMtreatsallentities

equally,asdoestheRDARegistry,becauseitisoptimizedforlinkeddataenvironments.The

TheRegistrylabelsareverbalizedusing“has…”and“is…of”templates,butthisapproachis

notappropriateforRDAToolkit.TheToolkitelementanddesignatorlabelsneedtobegeneral

andsuitableforarangeofdifferentimplementationscenarios.Thelabelsareintendedforuse

inname/valuepairformatsaswellasRDFpredicate-propertiesthathaveintrinsicverbalization

inthesemanticsofthepredicate.Theproblemisubiquitousandunresolved,andiswhythe

TechnicalWorkingGrouphasbeenassignedongoingtask#2tomonitortheneedforvalue

of 31 vocabularyrepresentationsoftheRDAToolkitrelationshipelementsanddesignators,following

recommendation#7in6JSC/CILIPrep/3.

TheToolkitdesignatorlabelsareessentiallyconfinedtothenon-verbalizedpattern:

TheOMRthereforeaccommodatesdifferentlabelsfortheToolkitandtheRegistry.

Labelsfordesignatorsforsimilarrelationshipsbetweendifferentpairsofentityare

distinguishedbyaddingthenameoftheentity(e.g.,“(Expression)”)towhichthedesignator

applies;thatis,theentitybeingdescribedgivenasthedomainoftheproperty.Theresultisartificial,likeanaccesspointforthedesignator.

Furtherdistinctionbetweenlabelswillberequiredifmorecross-entitydesignatorsareadded

toRDA.Thecurrentmethodproducestwosetsofparentheses,asshownintheresultsofChange3.

Somelabellingissueshavebeennotedanddiscussedbefore,forexamplein6JSC/CILIPrep/2and6JSC/CILIPrep/3.

Issuesinclude:

ConfusinglabelsRDAToolkitusersfindthequalifiedlabelsusingparenthesesconfusing,althoughtheyarenot

intendedforend-userconsumption,forexampleasdisplaylabels.Thisconfusionislikelyto

increasewithcross-entitydesignatorsrequiringtwoqualifiers,asshownintheresultsofChange3.

AmbiguityoftherelatedentityTheToolkitlabelsdonotalwaysindicatethedirectionoftherelationship.Forexample,reproducedas(manifestation)canbeusedunambiguouslyas:

TheWorkingGroupswelcometheinclusionofdesignatorsandreciprocalsinacomprehensive

alphabeticallistingastheGlossaryintheAugust2016releaseofRDAToolkitbecauseitpartiallyresolvesthelastitem.

ThenewToolkitandRegistrysynchronizationinfrastructureisbasedonthelinkeddata

representationofRDAReferenceasRDAVocabulariesintheOpenMetadataRegistry.This

shouldallowgreaterflexibilityinthepresentationofrelationshipelementsanddesignatorsinRDAToolkit.

Toolkituserswillbenefitfromgreaterinteractivitywiththehierarchiesandcross-referencestonavigatetheincreasingnumbersofentitiesandrelationshipsbetweenthem.

ThebasicgroupingsofelementsanddesignatorsbasedontheoriginalFRBRgroupsarenotcompatiblewiththeLRMorthepreviousmodificationbyFRSAD.

Groupingsarerequiredbecausethenumberofdesignatorswillincreaseifthe

recommendationsofthispaperareaccepted.Itisbettertoorganizethedesignatorsprimarily

bysourceentity(domain);thatis,theentitybeingdescribed.Witheachprimarygroup,the

designatorscanbesub-groupedbytargetentity(range);thatis,therelatedentity.Aseparate

primarygroupisrequiredforthe“anyentity”high-levelrelationshipelements,andaseparate

sub-groupisrequiredwithineachprimarygroupfor“anyentity”designators,oftenreciprocals.Separateprimaryandsub-groupsforAgentwillallowde-duplicationofPFC-to-PFCdesignators.

ThereisnoformaldecisionframeworkforacceptingproposalsforA-typedesignators,although

proposalsmustindicatewheretheproposeddesignatorfitsintheexistinghierarchy.

TheLRMwillspecifyonlyprimaryandhigh-levelrelationshipsbetweenentities.Thechoiceof

broadcategoriesforRDArelationshipdesignatorswillnotaffectcompatibilitywiththeLRM.

AspecifieddecisionframeworkforproposedRDAdesignatorsisdesirable.

Allnewdesignatorsshouldspecify:

• ThedomainorRDAentitythatisbeingdescribed.

• TherangeorRDAentitythatisrelatedtotheentitybeingdescribed.

• Whatrelationshipelementordesignatoritrefines.Thedomainandrangeofthe

“parent”designatormustbethesameas,orsuper-classesof,therefiningdesignator.
