Getting Ready: Preparing for 9th Grade English 9th grade • July 23 - July 27 (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Ginger Reese Fee: $150
This program is designed to help assess and identify areas of
growth for more success in the upper school English program.
The sessions are designed for transfer students to Lausanne
Collegiate School from other K-8th Grade programs to get an
early look at the essential skills and content that is covered in
our 9th grade course of study. Upon completion of the course,
students will have an action plan of areas for improvement and
possible strategies and resources to assist their further preparation
for upper school English.
Getting Ready: Preparing for Upper School Mathematics9th - 12th grade • July 30 - August 3 (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)
TBD Fee: $150
This program is designed to help assess and identify areas of
growth for more success in the upper school mathematics
program. The sessions are designed for transfer students to
Lausanne Collegiate School from other K-8th Grade programs to
get an early look at the essential skills and content that is covered
in our geometry and Algebra courses of study. Upon completion
of the course, students will have an action plan of areas for
improvement and possible strategies and resources to assist their
further preparation for upper school mathematics.
Essential Student Skills for the Upper School: A Workshop for Greater Achievement9th - 12th grade • July 30 - August 3 (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Dr. Tom New Fee: $150
This highly interactive program is designed to complete a battery
of diagnostic inventories that will provide participants with a much
more realistic and workable awareness of the key skills and habits
that they will need to be highly successful in a very challenging
upper school program. Participants will leave the multiple sessions
with a better grasp of how they learn best and what habits of the
mind they need to further strengthen as they seek to excel in their
upper school studies.
Art and Critical Writing Course9th - 12th grade • July 9 - 13 (9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
Kelly Geer, Upper School Honors English Teacher Fee: $150
The goal of this course is to develop critical thinkers and critical
writers; my approach is to create critique circles that examine in a
student-directed and egalitarian way, different mediums of artistic
expression and how we approach writing about our interpretations
and impressions of such great works of art. We will examine
visual art, poetry, music, film, and sculpture, and strategic methods
that foster skills in critical writing: expressing core suppositions,
using evidence to support our suppositions, imbuing writing with
an original response, using transitions cleverly to pursue context
perspective and the importance of a delicate understanding of
detail and how it integrates a critical stance and provides depth
and texture, much as it does for the signified artifice that is being
examined. At the close of this week long course, students will feel
empowered with a discerning eye and a motivated hand to pen
their observations and perspectives, and comfortably share their
perspectives in the context of their critique circles.

Middle School Math & Algebra Essentials(5th - 8th grade)July 23 - August 3 (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Dean Wheaton, Middle School Mathematics Teacher Fee: $300
This course is aimed at reinforcing students’ understanding of
mathematical and algebraic skills and concepts in preparation
for higher level courses. We will investigate topics focused on
giving students a strong foundation for success in pre-algebra
and algebra. Beginning with a brief review of arithmetic
skills, students are introduced to the early middle school math
topics, including signed numbers and variables and their use in
problem solving, polynomials, exponent rules, multi-step and
rational equations/inequalities, and even a preview of radicals.
Students will learn to create, analyze, and interpret graphs in
their study of statistics. Geometry continues to be explored,
with students classifying polygons and using measurement skills
to find the perimeter, area, and volume of geometric figures.
Students should expect to be actively challenged with a variety
of meaningful problems, refreshing projects, and interesting real-
world applications.

Ginger Reese Fee: $300
Join us this summer to review all aspects of the writing process.
We will review the parts of speech and the components of a
sentence and a paragraph and work toward a five-paragraph
expository essay. We will review those classroom exercises that
will teach us to write more efficiently and to employ vocabulary
that helps us utilize just the right word. We will diagram our
sentences to see the parts of speech at work. Additionally,
students will review rules of punctuation, study sentence variety
and sentence fluency, and add to their vocabularies, all in the
interest of polishing their written work. Each student will leave
this course with a good review of both grammar and the writing
process.

Mavis Negroni, Upper School Spanish Teacher
Fee: $900 (No Credit) / $1200 (Credit)
Spanish I introduces students to the language and culture of
Spanish-speaking countries. Students will acquire a practical
working knowledge of Spanish pronunciation, vocabulary,
and grammar, while exploring Hispanic cultures, history, and
geography. Although the textbook and its ancillaries will serve as
the foundation of the course, numerous other authentic resources
will be used to support student understanding of grammar and
vocabulary, as well as to foster a deeper appreciation of culture.
These resources include, but are not limited to websites, movies,
commercials, audio files, magazine and newspaper articles, as
well as literature excerpts. By the end of the course, students
will be able to accurately talk about the present using regular,
stem-changing, reflexive and irregular verbs, talk about the past
in its most basic form (preterit), ask for information, express
likes and dislikes, describe with accuracy people and their
surroundings, use an extensive functional vocabulary (cardinal
numbers, nationalities, professions, household items, calendar,
places, physical description, body parts, daily routine, weather,
dates, time, colors, clothing, numbers, and family, among others)
as well as manage a preliminary range of linguistic structures
that will allow them to strongly communicate at a basic-mid
level. Classes are taught in Spanish and students are expected to
speak in the target language. Students will be evaluated through
tests and quizzes, short compositions, short oral presentations,
short listening activities and projects. Final accrual of credit is by
successful performance on a comprehensive exam (75%).
Algebra IJune 4 - July 6 (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of pre-algebra program
This course is the bridge between elementary and higher level
mathematics and is designed to lay the conceptual foundations
for advanced mathematical courses. In addition to the focus on
algebraic manipulations of equations, problem-solving and critical-
thinking skills are emphasized. Algebraic principles are connected
with other areas of mathematics, other disciplines, and real-world
applications to provide students with a better understanding of
how algebra is relevant to their lives and their futures. Final accrual
of credit is by successful performance on a comprehensive exam
(75%).
GeometryJune 4 - July 6 (1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
Instructor TBD Fee: $900 (No Credit) / $1200 (Credit)
Pre-requisite: Successful completion of pre-algebra program
This course includes the study of the terms, properties, and
relationships related to the study of plane geometry and
introductory solid geometry. Also included is the study of lines,
planes, angles, and polygons, and their specific properties and
relationships, along with some coordinate geometry and elementary
geometric figures. A major purpose of this course is for students
to acquire a strong foundation in the basic definitions, postulates,
theorems, and properties of plane geometry, as well as to develop
deductive reasoning in proofs and problem-solving. Final accrual
of credit is by successful performance on a comprehensive exam
(75%).
