In the United States, there are 2 types of college accreditation that are distributed by 3 different types of accrediting agencies.

Accrediting Agencies

1885• Regional Accreditation was

first established to better anticipate the needs of the students & institutions.

Beginnings

1912• National Accreditation

met the rise in career specific schools.

19121993• Programmatic

Accreditation ensured consistency between institutions & academic programs.

Regional agencies accredit more than 3,000 colleges & universities.

National agencies accredit more than 4,000 religious & career oriented institutions.

Programmatic agencies accredit more than 19,000 programs throughout the country.
