ACQUISITION OF LAND FOR THE JAMAICA/KENVILLE HOUSING PROJECT

Four fashion designers fromDurban are set to benefitfrom a partnership whichaims to develop the provin-cial fashion industry andmake it more competitivenationally and globally.Karen Monk-Klijnstra,Kathrin Kidger, Genna-Wae

Webster and SiyethembaNgwenya have been spon-sored by the KwaZulu-NatalFashion Council (KZNFC) totake part in the renownedJohannesburg Fashion Week.The sponsorship is through apartnership agreement withTrade and Investment KZN(TIKZN). Up and comingdesigner Ngwenya, said itwas an honour for him to be

a part of this group that willtake part in the FashionWeek. “As a young designerthis will give me an opportu-nity to showcase my designsat the Fashion Week. I willalso be able to grow myclientele” said the visiblyexcited Ngwenya.

Programme DirectorJasmine Sultan, said the pur-pose of sending these

designers to theJohannesburg Fashion Weekwas part of the KZNFC’sMarket Access Programme.Local shows are targeted toprovide designers with theopportunity to showcasetheir ranges and in doing soprovide them with access tomarkets, i.e. buyers andretailers. “From an econom-ic perspective, we want them

to come back to Durbanwith full order booksbecause this means job cre-ation in the province” shesaid.

Sultan said that lastNovember, the KZNFCestablished a sub-committeewhich included representa-tion from the Municipality’sEconomic DevelopmentUnit (Sector Development),

TIKZN and KZNDEDT. TheKZNFC embarked on ameticulous, transparent andequitable process to selectdesigners to showcase atJohannesburg Fashion Week.

She said a call for applica-tions was put out in thenewspapers and designerswere invited to submitdetailed CV's. These wereshortlisted by the sub-com-mittee and the qualifyingdesigners were invited to aninterview where they had topresent their company port-folio, their experience in theindustry and actual gar-ments. They were also sub-jected to a host of standardquestions put to them by thepanel.

Sultan said that one of theKZNFC’s objectives is growthe fashion design sector inKZN into a world-classindustry and firmly positionDurban as a fashion destina-tion. She further added thatthe support from the privatesector for this event has beenphenomenal with Velvet Skysponsoring flights andSignature Life Hotels spon-soring accommodation forthe KZNFC, designers, mod-els and crew. “We are takingDurban to Johannesburgbecause Durban is Alive!”she emphasized. The KZNFCwas established by theeThekwini Municipality’sEconomic DevelopmentUnit and KZNDEDT to sup-port that fashion design sec-tor.
