CHAUTAUQUA Opioid Use Following TBI: A Perfect StormPRESENTERS: KRISTEN DAMS-O’CONNOR, RACHEL ADAMS MODERATOR: JOHN CORRIGAN The opioid epidemic has been recognized as a public health emergency in the United States and several countries around the world, as awareness of the dire consequences of long-term opioid use has spread. Individuals with TBI are increasingly recognized as a subgroup at elevated risk for opioid misuse, opioid use disorders (OUD) and
dire consequences of opioid use. Still, opioid pain medications play a lifesaving role in acute TBI management and can effectively manage chronic pain in this population. This complicated topic will be discussed by leading experts in the fields of TBI, substance use, and pain management. ACRM.org/864042AdamsDams-O’Connor Corrigan

THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER mHealth Applications in Neurorehabilitation: Interactaion of Neuroplasticity, Technology and Clinical Practice ACRM.org/ICC1
SPECIAL SYMPOSIUM ANCHOR: mRehab: New Models of Care Using Information and Communication Technology to Support Rehabilitation in the Home and Community
PRESENTER: Mike Jones, PhD, FACRM, Vice President of Research and Technology, Shepherd Center, Atlanta, Georgia. TEC, CC ACRM.org/772231
Mobile information and communication technologies (ICT) are reaching the maturity needed to support robust, remote mobile healthcare. As “digital health” catches on it is assisting in managing the provision of care throughout the health ecosystem, supporting the shift to value-based care. This presentation will introduce the newly-funded Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on ICT Access for Mobile Rehabilitation. The RERC is a collaboration between Shepherd Center, Duke University, UC-Irvine, Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute, and commercial partners PtPal and FlintRehab. Its mission is to advance mRehab, developing and demonstrating the value of innovative ICT applications for rehabilitation in the home and community.
THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER Post-Acute and Community Rehabilitation: Present & Future Practice/Needs ACRM.org/ICC2
SPECIAL SYMPOSIUM ANCHOR: Person-Centered Rehabilitation and Beyond: Where We Are and Where We Could Go Next
PRESENTERS: Christina Papadimitriou, PhD, Associate Professor, Oakland University; and Nicola Kayes, PhD, MSc (Hons), BSc, Professor of Rehabilitation and Director, Centre for Person Centred Research, Auckland University of Technology) CC, INT ACRM.org/773674
Person Centered (PC) rehabilitation is integral to quality rehabilitation care. There are multiple models of care that attempt to frame this ubiquitous concept in an effort to implement it into practice. The overall goal of this symposium is to dialogue about this important topic rather than decide on a single model for PC care. We will offer critical appraisals of historical, cultural, and evidence-based information about this important trend in order to rethink rehabilitation anew.
FRIDAY 23 OCTOBER Lifestyle Approaches to Achieve Long Term Health in Rehabilitation Populations ACRM.org/ICC3
SPECIAL SYMPOSIUM ANCHOR: Promoting Real World Physical Activity to Improve Health Outcomes in Persons Living with Multiple Sclerosis
PRESENTERS: Victor Mark, Erwin van Wegen, Mark Hirsch, Ekaterina Dobryakova, Michele York ND, LM, TEC ACRM.org/772092
Victor Mark, MD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Movement Scientist Erwin van Wegen, PhD of Amsterdam University Medical Center, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, The Netherlands, will present a SPECIAL SYMPOSIUM with a focus on ongoing and recently completed trials on rehabilitation to improve fatigue, physical activity and real world activities of daily living among people living with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS). The presenters aim to provide rehabilitation clinicians and scientists evidence-based insight into the relationship between real world physical activity patterns and coping with fatigue among PwMS.
