Batman doesn’t only protect Gotham city!

He protects words with short vowel sounds.

Can anybody give me an example of a word with a short vowel sound?

Batman can’t protect every word with a short vowel sound, so Robin comes along to help him. Together they protect words from changing when ‘ing’ is added to them.

Here are some more examples of words with short vowel sounds on them. Do you notice something they all have in common?

What did you notice?

When we add ‘ing’ to short vowel words (a,e,i,o,u) ending in two or three

consonants we simply add the letters i, n and g.

Batman doesn’t protect words with a short vowel ending with one consonant

so we have to double the last letter.
