Students solve an essential question or problem using the content knowledge and skills of science and social studies.
Reader’s and writer’s workshop frontload the inquiry units with background research and research skills for students to solve problems.
Focus of inquiry is to make learning personal.
Counselor Classroom Visits ● Throughout the year the counselor visits all classrooms and teaches
lessons that are developmentally appropriate and preventative in nature. These lessons often focus on helping students build good character and develop social thinking.
5th grade transition to middle school lesson
4th grade “Kind Kapes”
4th grade “The Cards You’re Dealt”
Small Groups
● Small groups provide a wonderful way for students to meet new friends and develop positive coping skills in a safe and fun environment. Some topics include: managing anger, changing families, grief/loss, building friendships, organization/study skills, increasing self-esteem, conflict management and managing anxiety.
Working with Individuals
● Individual counseling is a one-on-one meeting with a student to discuss a problem, concern, or issue in a confidential setting. Students may contact me via, "I need to see the counselor slips" found in their homeroom and/or the media center. Individual counseling sessions are short-term and each session may last between 5-30 minutes. The focus is on the development of coping and strategy building.
