pesticidesPESTICIDESWhat are pesticides?The term is used very broadly to include:• all chemical products intended for use in the

prevention or control of pests, diseases and weeds in crops.

• all chemical products used to protect harvested products against pests and diseases.

• all chemical products used to eradicate malarial mosquitoes or rid cattle of ticks etc.

pesticidesThere are hundreds of pesticides. These can be classified in

different ways. One method of classification is by type of pest or disease on which it is effective:

herbicidesA herbicide is a toxic material used to get rid

of unwanted plant life.Two groups of herbicides and these are

selective and non selective herbicides.Examples of non selective herbicides are;

Glyphosate, Paraquate, acetochlor, Non selective herbicides are used during the

beginning of the season, oct to January.

Con’tExamples of selective herbicides are : MCPA,

Atrazine + cyanazine (branzine), Fluazifop-p-butyl.

Selective herbicides are used in the mid season, when crops have already germinated , around January to march.

InsectidesAn insecticide is a chemical used to control

an insect from damaging plants in a field.Examples of insecticides includes:

Acetamiprid, Chlorpyrifos, Lambda cyalopthrin, Abamectin, phorate, methamidofos, Cypermethrin, dimethoate and marathon

Insecticides are used in the period of sept to march, and in June –July.

fungicidesA fungicide is a chemical used to control

fungal diseases in plants.

Examples of fungicides includes: Chlorothalonil, copper ox chloride, Mencozeb, Metalaxyl + Mencozeb, methomyl, tubuconozal,

Fungicides are used in around nov – march and in around june-july.

fumigantsA fumigant is a chemical that is used to

control pests that cause damage to grains.

Examples of fumigants includes Aluminium phosphide, Saaf, chilindamatula dust.

Fumigants are used at the end of the season in around may-august.
