From Fr. Joe It’s getting late and it’s the night before the bulletin
deadline. I had been away for a couple of days visiting with
and giving support to a family member in a crisis situation.
Now I’m back in Alpena, but the crisis continues, and is still
heavy on my mind. As so many of you have experienced, it
is frustrating when you can’t fix the problem and your only
recourse – at least for the time being – is to pray. While we
know in our head that prayer does help and is powerful, it
doesn’t always feel that way and can seem not enough. So,
I’m going to ask for your assistance in two ways. One is -
without giving details, would you please pray for all those
involved and affected by this crisis, and that God’s will be
heeded and done. The second involves you helping me
with this bulletin article. (I’ve done this before when the
deadline was looming and it was getting late, but it has
been a while.) I’ll start the thought process and then you
continue it – filling in the short blank with relevant
particulars from your life. Ok, here goes …..
In the Gospels of the previous three Sundays (15th-17th
Sundays in Ordinary Time) Jesus spoke to the crowds in
parables. What we hear on this 18th Sunday is not a
parable, but a miracle – with just a few measly loaves of
bread and a couple of fish Jesus feeds a very large crowd of
hungry people who had followed him on foot to a deserted
place. “Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking
up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and
gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the
crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up
the fragments left over – twelve wicker baskets full. Those
who ate were about five thousand men, not counting
women and children.” (Matthew 14:19-21) While this
Gospel account isn’t a parable, some people may be
inclined to view it as just a fanciful story. But do you
remember the parables from the Gospel two Sundays ago?
About the Kingdom of heaven being like a small mustard
seed which after being planted grows into a large bush that
birds can dwell in? Or like yeast that a woman mixed with
three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was
leavened (which would have been enough to feed about
100 people!)? In both of those parables, what seemed
small and insignificant – the tiny seed that was planted; the
yeast kneaded into the flour – grew with God’s grace. It is
God who gives the seed, the yeast, the five loaves, the two
fish, the …, etc. What we need to do is our part (plant it,
mix it, share it) and God can, and will, make it grow – and
abundantly so.
(Here’s where you take over …..)
In the space that follows, contemplate what is God
asking you to plant? to knead? to share? to hand over? so
that He can bless you, me, us graciously and abundantly?

Have a blessed week,
P.S. In a letter accompanying a copy of his book, Relevant
Radio’s Rev. Francis Hoffman, JCD (aka Fr. Rocky) has asked
me to extend an offer to you that seems too good to be
true – a FREE copy of his new book “Mary at the Crossroads
of History” (I admittedly haven’t read it yet – just received it
today – but I’m looking forward to). Simply go to
www.relevantradio.com/freebook3. At the link you’ll see
the following statement right before where you fill in your
name and address:
“Get your free copy of Mary at the Crossroads of
History today! Free as in totally free! No shipping, no
handling - just sign up and we'll send you a free book.”
So this truly is a free offer. You don’t even have to pay
shipping and handling. I hope you will take advantage of
this opportunity to learn more about the role of our Blessed
Mother throughout history, and urge others to do so as
well. But as Relevant Radio asks, don’t fill in the information
for others; encourage them to visit the site and sign up for
themselves. You never know what might catch someone’s
attention and lead them deeper into the faith.

Pray for Success in Resuming Perpetual Adoration
Heavenly Father, increase our faith in the Real Presence of your Son, Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. We are obliged to adore Him, to give Him thanks, and to make reparation for sin. We need your peace in our hearts, in our families, in our communities, and among nations. We need conversion from our sins and the mercy of your forgiveness. May we obtain this through prayer in our union with our Eucharistic Lord. Please send down your Holy Spirit upon the people of All Saints Parish to give them the love, courage, strength and willingness to respond to the invitation to Eucharistic Adora-tion. We beseech you to bless us in our efforts to resume Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Alpena. We ask this in the Holy Name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.
“Prayer is the place of refuge for every
worry, a foundation for cheerfulness, a
source of constant happiness,
a protection against sadness.”

preferred method of participating in Mass from home.
But may we suggest another option which is watching
weekend Mass livestreamed from All Saints Parish. If you
are unable to come to weekend Mass at All Saints (and we
do understand), this may be a way for you to still feel
connected to your home parish.
Visit our website, alpenacatholics.org, and click on the
YouTube button in the top right corner. Once you are on
our All Saints Parish YouTube homepage, click on the
videos tab and you should be able to find the recording.
• You can watch the 10:00 am Sunday Mass live as it is
happening or, if that time doesn’t work for you, check
back later and watch it when it is more convenient.
• Daily Mass (which is not a public Mass) is now being
livestreamed weekdays on Facebook and YouTube at
