AmbitionsPicture this: Snapshots

Ambitions is committed to empowering and building the skills for work and independent living of young people and adults with learning disabilities through practical experiences and supported work placements within their own local community and culture.

What our young people want for themselves:

Have a sense of belongingTo be valued and respectedTo feel supported in their learningTo be able to learn new skills at a pace which suits themTo have a reason for getting up in the morningTo have the satisfaction of a job well doneTo be able to pass on their skillsTo be proud of their achievementsTo be part of the communityTo be excited and enjoy the work they do

We have recently undertaken a project with our young people and adults that explores the world of photography. The aim of the project is to produce a creative, innovative, challenging and enjoyable experience for a group of 6-8 young adults (18-35) with learning disabilities, that are currently attending ‘Ambitions’Our goal is to draw on a wide range of learning and teaching methods appropriate to the nature of the student profi les and to provide them with an opportunity to experience a variety of activities that will include:

How to use a digital camera. How to take photographs in a variety of locations and environments using natural and artifi cial light sources. How to transfer images from the camera onto computer software programmes. How to use computer programmes to manipulate and enhance digital images. How to print hard copy images for display purposes. How to produce images in a ‘book/portfolio format and ‘online.’

We will also take this opportunity, using industry standard broadcast equipment, to produce a documentary style record of the student involvement in the ‘Snapshot’ programme. This documentary will be a record of how the project and students progressed, identifying personnel achievement and group participation.

Ambitions

We have taken the opportunity to focus the initial part of the project on a weekend residential at ‘The Beamsley Project’ a charitable trust that provides holiday accommodation in the Yorkshire Dales, for people with disabilities and their carers. Beamsley is situated just two miles from Bolton Abbey and six miles from Skipton, the Gateway to the Dales. The following is a ‘Snapshot’ of the experiences recorded by the young people using the digital cameras, and by the ‘professionals’ that supported them during this exciting and exhilarating experience. There were over 1200 images taken during this fi rst stage of the project, these are just some of them.Have fun and enjoy the images, we did!
