Case #1 - Narrative

Vehicle #1 was eastbound on Lake Rd. traveling the speed limit of 45 mph. A pedestrian, using a cane, was walking east on the sidewalk parallel to Lake Rd. The pedestrian attempted to cross the road mid-block, entering the traffic lane from between two parked cars.

The driver of V1 was adjusting his radio and did not see the pedestrian until he emerged from between the parked vehicles directly in the path of his vehicle. V1 swerved left but could not avoid striking the pedestrian.

After the initial impact V1 continued forward and jumped the curb of the median and struck a light pole where it came to final rest. The driver of V1 was wearing his seatbelt and was uninjured. The pedestrian came to rest in the street where he was pronounced dead by responding emergency officials.

The driver was found to have a BAC of .04 but alcohol was believed not to have contributed to the crash. An inspection of the vehicle showed it had balding tires and a cracked windshield.

Case #2 - Narrative

V1 was Eastbound approaching the intersection. V2 was northbound

accelerating into the intersection where it had been stopped. V3

was stopped for a red light at the intersection. The driver of V1 was

talking on a cell phone and did not see the light turn red. V1 entered

the intersection and struck the left side of V2. V2 continued forward

where it struck V3 before departing the road and striking a fence

where it came to final rest.

The driver of V1 was wearing his seatbelt and sustained minor injuries.

The driver of V2 was unbelted and suffered fatal injuries. The driver

of V3 was belted and uninjured.

Inspection of the scene showed the traffic signal to be functioning

properly and the ground was wet due to a light rain that was falling.

It also appeared that neither driver attempted any avoidance.

Case #3 - Narrative

V1 was traveling at an estimated speed of 60 mph (posted limit of 45).

V1 steered right in an attempt to avoid a large puddle of standing

water which formed over a clogged sewer drain and subsequently

lost control.

V1 began rotating and jumped the curb onto the center median where it

struck a small tree with its back left corner. V1 continued rotating

and entered the opposing lanes of traffic.

V2 was traveling the speed limit when it braked and steered right in an

attempt to avoid V1, but struck the right side of V1. V1 then struck a

parked vehicle with its left side and came to final rest.

The driver of V1 suffered minor injuries but the passenger was

pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of V2 was uninjured.
