Research and development initiatives
• Character development project with the University of Pennsylvaniaand David Levin ’88 and the KIPP NewYork City charter schools.
• A“design thinking”project with IDEO, the global design and innovation firm.
• Course development in the area of interdisciplinary studies that builds on ourcurrent offerings, Constructing America and Integrated Liberal Studies (ILS).

Professional development opportunities
Working with university-based researchers andleaders in the field of education (Grant Wiggins andTony Wagner), we are conducting action research,developing curriculum, learning to use technologymore effectively to improve learning, andimplementing peer coaching.
Cutting-edge classroom resources
• Investigating and developing our ownlearning materials for classes.
• Inviting world-class speakers to talk toour students (Majora Carter, Walter Isaacson,John Kao, etc.)
• Implementing new technologies in theclassroom, including the addition of19 SmartBoard interactive white boards inthe past year.
• Providing online support of the work in theclassroom by utilizing an advanced learningmanagement system (Moodle).
Learning research centers on both campuses
The River and Hill Learning Research Teams are starting to work more significantly with the libraries, the IT department,the Director of Studies, and faculty members to support student and teacher learning.
Strategic partnerships with other schools and organizations
We are currently working with KIPP, the University of Pennsylvania and the Positive Psychology Center, the Center for the Study of Boys’and Girls’Lives, the Independent Curriculum Group, Wave Hill,Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy, Tiffany Austin Liston ’94 and Public Prep,CORKS (Coalition of Riverdale/Kingsbridge Schools), the Somarela Foundation, the National Association of Independent Schools, and theNewYork State Association of Independent Schools.

Ongoing learning
Riverdale provides travel and study grants tofaculty members, as well as assistance for highereducation for staff.
Financial aid funding
We have increased levels of financial aid fundingbased on need, increased grants for additionalsupplies such as transportation and computers,and continue to offer grants to familiesexperiencing short-term financial difficulties.
Global travel/study opportunities
In addition to organizing student/faculty trips toSpain, Botswana, Quebec, and India, Riverdalesupports exchange students visiting the schoolfrom Europe and Australia.
NYC community outreach initiatives
• Providing resources to local schoolsand organizations.
• Visiting museums, theaters, and concertsregularly with students on field trips.
• Offering an expanded selection of communityservice opportunities to students throughoutthe school.
• C.A.R.E. in Action on the River Campus—providing an opportunity for students totake the C.A.R.E. program and make itsvalues concrete outside of the school and inthe community.
