Mandate of the Host Organization
Mandate of the ENVIS Centre
The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a Central University was established in 1969. It is a premier institution of Teaching and Research. The school of Environmental Sciences focuses upon interdisciplinary teaching and research through innovative methods.
The JNU ENVIS Resource Partner was established in 1994 at the School of Environmental Sciences, JNU. It supports and promotes research, development and innovation in Geodiversity & Impact on Environment. Social contributions through environmental activities and events. Also develops Research and Geo-spatial Database on the following Thematic Areas/Mandates:
• Pollution (Air, Water, Noise, Soil and Industrial) • Geology & Geomorphology (Delhi NCR and Surroundings) • Climate (Temperature/Rainfall, Relative Humidity/Wind pattern/Air Quality etc.) • Hydrogeology (Groundwater, surface water & geochemistry) • Topography, Soil and Land Use Pattern (Land Use Land Cover & Change detection) • Disaster (Indian Himalayan Region, Indo-Gangetic Plain and various parts of India) • Sensitive Area (Protected area, Sanctuaries, Biosphere Reserves etc.) • Flora and Fauna (Endangered, vulnerable, rare, medicinal etc.)
Activities Undertaken by JNU ENVIS RP for the FY 2019-20 8.1 Publication of Newsletters & Special Issues: Every quarter a Newsletter on assigned thematic area is published. Articles are invited from faculty and research scholars on selected themes. Submitted manuscripts are sent for review to subject experts. Once approved by the reviewers and editors, manuscripts are published in JNU ENVIS Newsletters. Main focus is to cover all thematic areas, important environmental issues and events. During 2019-20 newsletters have been published on thematic areas Geodiversity, Pollution, Climate, Ecology, Soil, Hydrogeology, Flora and Fauna etc. We have successfully achieved our target of publishing four Newsletters for FY 2019-20. Both printed and electronic forms of Newsletters are released.Detail of newsletters with cover page snapshot is given in the Table below-

11. National Environment Survey – Grid based Decision Support System District designated to JNU ENVIS RP for Survey is South Delhi. According to assigned activities we have divided South Delhi District into 9x9 km grids. South Delhi falls under 11 grids (maps given below). For base information secondary data has been collected on parameters mentioned in TABLE below. Data has been collected out of total 52 sub-modules, 30 sub-modules available and 22 sub-modules data still needs to be collected, post Stakeholder meeting. Data collection have been sourced from the Central Government reports, Census 2011, Agriculture Census, DPCC, District Handbook, Reports of Delhi Government, CPCB, BSI, ZSI, FRI, WII etc. After analysis of secondary data, geospatial layers both raster and vectors have been created using open-source GIS software. Eco-sensitive zone location map, Transportation map, Block level Map, NDVI (1977 & 2017) has been developed.

Issues/ hurdles faced in undertaking ENVIS activities: 1. Financial Issues: Delay in release of Recurring grant, which impacts ENVIS activities and manpower. 2. Since F.Y. 2016-17 we have not received Non-recurring Grant for purchase of new Hardware and Software.
Since the mandates of ENVIS have changed and the number of manpower has increased, thus new Hardware and Software are of utmost importance.
