The Banaras Hindu University, noblest temple of learning, was founded by great
educationist, visionary Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviyaji in the
year 1916. The University has enormous development since then in all the fields of
education in the country. The founder of the Institute of Medical Sciences was Padmshri
Prof.K.N.Udupa, who has established a unique Institution under one roof, which imparts
training to the students in Modern Medicine, Ayurveda, Dental Sciences and Nursing. At
this juncture, I on behalf of entire Institute fraternity pay homage to these great noble souls.
The Institute has a high position in the field of medical education, research and patient care
in the country.
I take this opportunity to welcome you all on the occasion of 56th Annual Day Celebration of
our Institute. Today, I am delighted to apprise you that our Institute has been ranked among
top ten medical institutions of the country during last several years. I am presenting before
you the profile of the Institute as Annual Report in this Centenary year Celebrations of the
University.

Anaesthesiology
• Dr. Vishal Krishna Pai got first prize in poster presentation at International Conference of pain management at Lucknow. He was selected as ELSEVIER student Ambassador for 2015-16 and also selected as ambassador for International Journal of Medical students 2016.
• Dr. Ronak Rajen Mankoid got first prize for poster presentation in state critical care conference 2015.
• Dr. Amrita Rath got first prize in quiz and third prize in paper presentation & Dr. Atchya Arun Kumar got third prize in poster presentation at UPISACON 2015.
• Dr. Abhinay J got first prize in quiz in UPISACON 2015.
• Dr. Amiya K Barik got second prize in quiz at ISACON 2015.
• Dr. Arun Raj Pandey, Dr. Pratibha Ranjan & Dr. Sukhdeep Richi got First & Third prize, respectively in paper presentations at CRITICON 2015.
• Dr. Badri Prasad Das got first prize in oral presentation and second prize in quiz at International conference organized by ISCCM 2015 at Kolkata. He also got first prize in oral presentation at national conference organized by ISCCM 2015.

• Ms. Rashmi, Ms. Sharda, Ms. Preeti Sunil, Mr. Jyoti Prakash Pani, Ms. Barkha, Mr. Prasenjit, Mr Kapil Malviya, Ms.Pratibha and Ms. Nidhi presented papers at UP-ASICON held at SRM Bareilly in October 2015. & National Conference of Anatomy held at Lucknow.
• Mr. Prasenjit got the best paper Award at UP-ASICON 2015.
• Ph D students presented papers in Indian association of Medical Genetics conference held in Jodhpur December 2015.
• Mr. Sunil K Rai and Mr. Jyoti Prakash Pani got the best paper presentation award in World congress on clinical nutrition 2015.
• Mr. Jyoti Prakash Pani participated in the International conference in Czechoslovakia in September 2015.
• Mr. Sunil K Rai and Mr. Jyoti Praash Pani attended International Symposia on genetics education at Lucknow in February 2015
• Ms. Rashmi, Ms Preeti and Ms. Barkha participated in the
workshop for FISH in cytogenetics & Ms. Preeti also
participated in the workshop in Karyotyping cytogenetics-
2015.
• Ms. Rashmi attended ITRC , Lucknow for 1 month training in
real time PCR.

writing in Hyderabad , 2015 & also attended 3 months
extensive training in advanced cytogenetics at University of
Exeter,UK.

• Dr.Renu Kumari presented paper in poster presentation at AMBICON (2014 – 2015), and oral presentation at World congress on clinical nutrition 2015 – 2016.

• Dr Ravindu Jain got 1st in State Level Rheumatology Quiz at KGMU, Lucknow and 2nd in Zonal level Rheumatology Quiz at AIIMS, New Delhi.

19 students of B. Sc (Nursing) 4th year participated in National Conference on Occupational Hazards in the health care industry and two days National Conference on “Chemotherapy error and Pathetic Pallative care: Rhetorism to clinical competence ” held from March 24-26, 2015 at Gyansagar, College of Nursing,
Rajpura, Punjab under the supervision of Dr. Poonam Jyoti Rana.
Lamp lightening Ceremony was held on May 12, 2015 for the batch 2014 & 2015 at Prof.K.N.Udupa Auditorium and students took oath to serve the humanity.
B. Sc Nursing students organized Jhanki’s on the occasion of Krishna Janamasthmi at NDH Hostel on Sep 05, 2015.
The Great India BP campaign held on Sep 21, 2015 organized by Dr. Dharmendra Jain. 156 Nursing students participated as volunteer and received First Prize for their contribution under the guidance of Dr (Mrs.) Poonam Jyoti Rana.
World Teachers Day was celebrated on 5th October, 2015 organized by First Year,B.Sc Nursing students and chief guest on this occasion was the Director, IMS.

Projects running in College of Nursing:
National Health Mission recognizes the need of strengthening and equipping the basic service provider, auxiliary nurse midwife and other nursing staff to provide reproductive health and maternal, neonatal and child health services at the grassroots level.
The objective of this project is to strengthen the College of Nursing, Varanasi for enabling it to act and assume responsibilities of the state Nodal Centre for improving pre service education for nursing midwifery cadre in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
There are 3 state Nodal Centres of Excellence in the state. College of Nursing, IMS, BHU is also selected to be established as state Nodal Centre. The name of funding agency is National Health Mission and Technical support from Jhpiego for strengthening the Nursing College and establishes it as state Nodal Centre.
For strengthening of Nursing under NHM had conducted 2 days clinical skill standardization training for all service providers (doctors, nurses & nursing faculty) working in labor room and new-born care unit.

All the 4th year B. Sc. Nusring students participated in the “Medical Examination Programme for teaching and non-teaching staff ” at various departments, viz, Institutes of Agriculture Sciences, Management Studies, Faculties of Visual Arts, Law and examined more than 500 employees.

SIR SUNDERLAL HOSPITAL
Sir Sunderlal hospital is a teaching and training Hospital for imparting clinical
teaching and training to the students of Institute of Medical Sciences. Established way back
in the year 1926 with a bed strength of 96 beds, it is now a modern hospital with 1500 beds.
It is the only tertiary care referral centre for the entire eastern UP, western Bihar,
Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh & neighbouring country Nepal catering to the
medical needs of about 20 Crore population. It houses both Modern Medicine and Indian
Medicine disciplines under one roof. Recently a new 60 bedded air-conditioned Emergency
building has been added.
The S.S. Hospital runs on the regular maintenance grant as well as ad-hoc
development grants from University Grants Commission. Besides it also generates a part
of its own financial support in the form of Revolving Fund through its earnings from the user
charges for its services from the patients. A number of SPECIAL CLINICS are also being

Recent Achievements (during 2015-16 in brief)
Within existing resources a number of facilities have been added in 2016. Some important infrastructure developments till date may be enumerated as under:-
1. Jan Aushadhi Kendra: A novel initiative of the Govt. of India and its first centre in
eastern U.P. at Sir Sundarlal Hospital has been made functional 2. ABG facility: This much needed investigation facility for seriously ill patients has
been started in CCI and Casualty OPD at a very nominal cost of Rs. 50/- per test. 3. Free Dialysis Facility: Provision for free dialysis of 15 patients per month has been
extended to patients belonging to weaker sections of the society. 4. Free Medication: Provision of free essential medicines to the tune of Rs. 1.00 Lac
per month to the needy patients attending Emergency services of SSH has been extended.
5. Linear Accelerator: A primary equipment needed for treatment of Cancer patients has been commissioned on 20.05.2015. This facility is being provided to the patients at a very nominal cost.
6. Hospital Management Information System: Its first phase has been completed
and has been made operational since January 30, 2015. Second phase is under process.
7. New building for Deptt. of R.T. & R.M.: A fully equipped new building became operational to facilitate cancer patients.
8. New Building for Emergency OPD: The 60 bedded new building having latest life saving equipments is ready for its operation which shall mitigate the congestion of present casualty OPD. With Ultrasound, X-Ray, Blood Investigation, Operation Theatre and Pharmacy will make the 100 bedded (60 new + 40 old) Emergency Service under one roof.

9. I.C.U. Renovation: The long pending work of I.C.U. renovation is being carried out on priority basis.
10. 24x7 Refreshment Facility: To ensure round the clock refreshment facility to common public visiting SSH, the refreshment counters has been made functional near cash collection building.
11. Waiting Hall: A new waiting area having capacity of around 200 persons has been
developed in New OPD for convenient waiting of patients and their attendants.
12. Fire Fighting System: The commissioning of Fire Fighting System in S. S. Hospital is in its final stage.
13. Duty Rooms: Additional duty rooms for resident doctors have been provided in wards for ensuring better care of patients.
14. Bilingual Signages: Various bilingual signages have been erected at prominent locations for ease of common people visiting S. S. Hospital.
15. Medical Records: Prepared & implemented the guidelines for easy access and delivery of medical records to patients & their attendants.
16. Utilisation Certificate: Utilisation Certificate with regard to various fund sanctioning agencies for treatment of patients viz. PM Relief Fund, CM Relief Fund, MP/MLA Discretionary Fund etc. has been furnished.
17. Dedicated counters for senior citizens /Divyang : To ensure timely issuance of
prescription slip to patients belonging to senior citizen / Divyang patients were given special privilege regarding OPD slip and deposition of Investigation charges.
18. New EPBX System: New EPBX system for effective communication and coordination is being installed and connectivity with other exchange through PRI system is under observation.
19. Consultants Parking: Additional space has been allocated for parking the vehicles
of consultants.

New Achievements (In brief) :-
(1) Single Window Facilities to the patient in Hospital for the investigations including
routine and specialized i.e. Blood, Urine, Stool, Immunological, Microbiological, ECG
(2) Prompt and immediate care of the patient coming to Emergency, where is a facility of Registration, Treatment and Investigations under one roof and report is also ready within half-an-hour. (Cardiac Profile, ABG with Electrolyte, Rapid Test for Dengue, CBC, Paracheck, U.S.G. etc.)
(3) The bed strength of the Hospital has been increased from 1254 to 1500 as per MCI guidelines.

(4) First time after two decades, free distribution of food (Lunch and Dinner both) to the poor patients of the Hospital started from June 2016.
(5) Hi-Tech updated ICU with 16 beds, now commissioned.
(6) Tree Plantation and beautification of surrounding areas of Hospital..
(7) For the convenience of patients new 20 water coolers have been installed in different areas of Hospital.
(8) Enhancement of Blood Bank facilities.
(9) Air conditioning of Eye, ENT & Labour Room completed and started functioning.
