Welcome to the beach
The picture on the ront cover was no
accident; it really is a combination o di-
erent images that I think about when I
think o massage education. Right there
on the sand, is where I put my students.
Every decision I make I think to mysel
how is this decision going to get my
students out there on that sandy beach.
I just returned rom the ABMP coner-
ence or massage educators, this con-
erence surprisingly gave me enough
material to ll about a thousand news-
letters, and I am sure you will get sick o
me reerencing it. The reason why we
went was to answer the question are we
really alone? The answer is complicatedbut it is yes, unortunately we are alone.
I was surprised to meet a lot o very nice
school administrators and they had a
lot o very good excuses why they have
shortened their programs and oering
less to their students, but at the end
o the day, all I can think o is: did their
student get to the sandy beach?
The best thing about meeting up with
your colleagues is that you have a
sympathetic ear to the diculties o
your proession. It is nice to see so many
people who were as stressed out as I
was, and it interesting to hear that we all
had the same challenges. The dierence
was how they reacted to the challenges.
For example, i one o
their students misses
a class, they would
deter that student by
charging a ee. I a
student was ailing a
class, they would nd
the student some
tutoring and charge
a ee. I the student
needed to retake a test, they would be
charged a ee. I understand where
decisions like this come rom, I have 5
accountants that prepare dierent parts
o the books, and believe I should be
charging the students a multitude o
ees to make nancial gains, but, thats
not what this proession is about and
undermines my values.
The worst part o my trip was undergo-
ing a two hour lecture about online
education. Everyone else loved this lec-
ture and was really sold on being able to
make money o o students rom other
states and were not using their acilities
and parking. The entire lecture ocused
on all the problems o trying to make an
online class equal to a real lie campus
class. There were tremendous problems
with technology, cheating, and cost.
To me the answer was pretty obvious
that online education was a terrible
idea, especially or massage or all
the apparent reasons that are going
through your head right now. To make
the argument even more dramatic, it is
illegal in most states, non
transerable to anyone
and not recognized by
most employers. The
person (salesman) giving
the talk then said to the
audience that they were
going to be let behind,
that it was the way o the
uture and they were going to miss out
on a lot o money. He might as well said
and you wont be cool.
Everyone was sold on the idea ater he
said that, and gladly gave into peer pres-
sure, except the supposedly not so cool
guy writing this article. I sat back in my
chair thinking about my student on the
beach saying I got my degree online.
I love technology, I am so grateul or
this computer to write this rant on, how-
ever I dont want to massage it.

For those o you who have not
met me, I am your new Director oFinancial Aid. I am a 2008 gradu-
ate rom the University o NorthernColorado with a Bachelors De-
gree in Psychology and a minor inBiological Sciences. I was born inManhattan, NY and lived in Bronx,
NY and Queens, NY, but moved toColorado when I was seven. I have
been dancing since I was threeyears old and began singing rom
the moment I spoke my rst words.I love trying new activities and haverecently started to appreciate all o
the outdoor activities that Coloradohas to oer. But most o my time is
spent as a mother to a wonderul
two-year old little girl who is the joyin my lie.
I am pleased to join the sta hereat the Academy and I look orward
to getting to know each o the stu-dents, aculty and sta even better
than I already have. Based on theshort time I have experienced, I ap-preciate the tight-knit group o indi-
viduals the Academy employs andenrolls. This environment is one
that I enjoy coming to work or each
day, especially the assignment I spe-cialize in; to ensure student enroll-ment by assisting with an aordabletuition. Having a college education
is undamental to a successul u-ture, along with hard work, dedica-
tion and passion or excellence. Buto course, we must all pay or that
achievement. Financial Aid is agreat resource to utilize toward thisaccomplishment. Mysel, and the
rest o the sta are here to assist in
making this endeavor to be a Regis-tered Massage Therapist a certainty. I
am currently working on outsourcingseveral lending institutions that may
provide urther nancial aid, in theorm o grants, scholarships and loansor current and prospective students.
By researching what other orms oaid may be accessible to students;
this will potentially eliminate the gapo tuition costs. Thus, the students
may ully enjoy their time here at theAcademy and ocus on their studiesas opposed to their payments while
enrolled. Please see me anytime, as Ihave an open door policy, regarding
nancial aid questions, payments,
or anything at all really. I am here tohelp in any way that I can. Thank youor having me here at the Academyand I look orward to watching our
students thrive with their proessionalcareer.
Director o Financial Aid,
Tiany Rodriguez
I hope everyone
enjoyed the break!
I want to start by welcoming Kirra andTiany to our team. In the two weeks
they have been here, I have alreadyseen great improvements and look
orward to our growth together. Iwould also like to welcome JessicaZamora and Brandi Notter to our sta,
as they will be the new Kinesiologyand Neuromuscular instructors. They
are both graduates o the Academyand are ready to share their knowl-
edge and experience as MassageTherapists with all o you. Anotherunamiliar ace you might have seen
around the building is Christie Adams. She is one o the new AAOS program
instructors. She currently teaches theBusiness Writing class on Thursdays
and will begin teaching the Marketingclass on Tuesdays in August. As theadvanced program progresses you
might also see Van Wetzig, as he willbe the Clinical Management instructor
starting next month.
Please see me i you have not alreadypicked up your new books. Yes, they
are in Tianys oce, but the Financial
Aid person no longer is in charge othat. I wont be the go to person orGAP payments/payment plans how-
ever. Tiany will be helping you withthat now.
Final grade reports are completed and
ready to be picked up. Unortunately, this is something that has been over
looked the past ew months but willbe done on a regular basis rom hereon out. I will also be handing out a
mid-term report ater mid-terms to
help you stay on track and/or get im-mediate help with classes i needed.I you have any questions please eel

Welcome back!
I hope you all had a wonderul break.
Some o you took advantage and gota lot o hours done while classes wereout. You all are a level closer to gradu-
ating and you need to make sure youare on track to graduate. I you are not,
please come see me so I can help. I al-ways can nd things or you to do, andpeople to trade with. Level 2 ,3, and 4
students, you must give 10 massagesto the general public in the Natural
Therapy Health Center. I you havenot, you need to get your schedules
in and start as soon as possible. Also,
the clinic is an excellent place to getreal world experience with real clients,
and you get hours or doing laundryor helping Sarah out with tasks. Level
4 students, you only have 10 weekslet! They are going to go by way aster
than you expect. You need to be do-ing hours every week. Please comesee me to nd out just how many per
weekyou need in order to nish byyour graduation date. For some o you
it may be a bigger number than youexpect.
Remember, everyone needs to be
doing laundry every time you do amassage. It is not air or the same ew
people to do everyone else's laundry. So please, respect your ellow class-
mates and clean up ater yourselves.
There have also been some complaintsabout negativity in the student clinic,
again have respect or the studentsdoing massages and stay quiet put
cellphones on silent, and remembereveryone can hear your conversations.Come see me with any questions.
Thanks,
Kelly
