“Confirmation brings an increase and
deepening of baptismal grace:
- it roots us more deeply in the divine
filiation which makes us cry, "Abba!
Father!";117
- it unites us more firmly to Christ;
- it increases the gifts of the Holy
Spirit in us;
- it renders our bond with the Church
more perfect;118
- it gives us a special strength of the
Holy Spirit to spread and defend the
faith by word and action as true
witnesses of Christ, to confess the
name of Christ boldly, and never to
be ashamed of the Cross.119”
Receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and
go forth and serve the Lord.

From the Office of
Liturgy and Music
Our 50-day celebration of Easter con-
cludes today with the great Solemnity
of Pentecost celebrating the descent
of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples in
the Upper Room (Acts 2:1-6). It has its
origins in the Jewish festival of Shavu-
ot, a spring harvest festival which cel-
ebrates the giving of the Torah (Ten
Commandments) to Moses on Mount
Sinai 50 days after the celebration of
the Passover. It is this festival that the
Disciples are celebrating when the
Lord appears to them. All of today's
readings point to the descent of the
Holy Spirit along with our Lord's prom-
ise to remain with us until the end of
time. The liturgy today is marked most
peculiarly by the Sequence Hymn
sung immediately before the Alleluia
before the Gospel reading. There
were many Sequence Hymns sung in
the early Church. The 16th-century
counter-Reformation Council of Trent
suppressed most of these, retaining
only 5 of them: Easter (Victimae Pas-
chali Laudes), Pentecost (Veni Sancte
Spiritus), Corpus Christi (Lauda Sion
Salvatorem), the Requiem Mass (Dies
Irae), and Our Lady of Sorrows (Stabat
Mater Dolorosa). Many of our popu-
lar hymns, though, have their origins in
Latin Sequence Hymns, including "O
Come, All Ye Faithful" and "Pange
Lingua.”

Life & Lay Leadership for the Diocese of Kalamazoo) and Dcn. Don Bouchard, DO

at the end for a question and answer session.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal 2018 As Christian stewards we recognize God as the source of everything we are and
have. We are grateful for our blessings and seek ways to give back, to return
some of these gifts, to show our love for the Lord and one another. As disciples of
Jesus Christ, all of us share in the mission of the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo.
Only when we work together can we accomplish God’s work. Please prayerfully
consider a very generous gift to this year’s appeal. Our parish goals are 100%
participation and $122,285.00. With your gift we can achieve them. Consider
increasing your last year’s gift by a percentage or specific dollar amount in order
to meet increased needs in our diocese and beyond. Every gift makes the work of
Jesus Christ possible. Thus far, we have heard from ~20% of our parishioners.
Catholic Relief Services This week, we are taking up The Catholic Relief Services Collection to respond to
Jesus in disguise. This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide relief and
support to struggling communities and to work toward peace and reconciliation
among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. Please
prayerfully consider how you can support the collection. Learn more at
www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.
