ISOMETRICELEVATION

PHASE III

PHASE I

PHASE II

COMPLETE

Throughout this project the timber construction of

Chicago’s arched truss, balloon frame has been

explored at two scales: “Too Fine” and “Too Course.”

Within this “Too Fine” scale portion of the project,

the cross-member bracing from the arched balloon

frame is the major timber construction detail being

scrutinized. Isolation of the arch, manipulation of it’s

dimensions, and elimination of vertical columns allows

for the exclusion of lateral forces to be possible.

The newly formed, arched truss connection details

supply the framework for a smaller, haptic object, in

which the manipulation of form and physical model

construction serve as a basis for further exploration

of the experimental truss system on a handheld scale

due to the nature of it’s transforming and collapsable

system of assembly.
